Re: Top Speed

I think our cars had similar aerodynamic characteristics to a third gen. The fastes thirdgen I ever heard about was a guy from sweeden that moved to the states and built a 91 or 92 z28. The exterior was all stock except for the addition of a splitter at the bottom of the spoiler in the front of the car. Oh it had a cowl induction hood too. He completely gutted the car and built his own tubular frame chassis for it. It had a front suspension based of a c4 vette and the rear was based of a porshe 911. The underside of the car had tunnels to channel the air the way he wanted it to move. It was powered by a 383 that spun to 8700 rpm or something like that. His top speed was clocked somewhere in the 260 mph range!!! I have the article scaned into my computer at home. The car was amazing. It was in popular hot rodding a few years back.

Re: Top Speed

Im one of the guys that have done 163. it took a while to get there at the top of 5th gear. i guess about 163 because there is no ending peg on my speedo, and measured off the approximate speed. that speed is crazy, i was crapping my pants, but i had to do it at least once.

Re: Top Speed

Ya. Imagine a tire popping or something suddenly in the road you would need to avoid all of a sudden! Rolling my car with T-tops I think I would be reduced to a tootsie roll in the end. Yikes!

He geared it to reach top speed in 5th.

275/40/17 tire, 0.74 5th gear, 3.23 rear = 5th tops out right near 192.

Re: Top Speed

I've hit 155mph and then the governor shut off the fuel supply. That was in 5th gear and she was still pulling. I didn't feel too much "floating" involved, she was pretty planted to the ground. It got my attention [I] really [I] quick of how fast I was going when I passed another car This was with stock rear end 3:42 and BFG g-Force tires.

Re: Top Speed

I did 5200 rpm in 6th gear with a 4.10 rear gear and 275/40/17 rear tires...anyone know how to calculate that into groundspeed?

Talking Re: Top Speed

mental image had me chuckling... I guess this is why Ricer's have wings! Proper Equipment!

The wing would actually be useful if ricers could even reach 100MPH without having the block and drivetrain fall out from underneath!

Secondly, what tire sizes were you all running?
what tire pressure are you supposed to run on the 275s? The book says for speeds above 1XX (i forget the number, 120?) to use a certain tire pressure, but I dont; where where the # is.

My 2002 Z28 had ZR rated tires on it and HP tuners said the limiter was factory set to 162 mph. I had it moved to 255 mph (the maximum it is able to be set to).

Tire pressure. The book says for running over 100 mph (where legal), to set the pressure to 38 psi or the maximum rated tire pressure on the tires (if the maximum is less than 38 psi). I forget what page, but after seeing the warning on the drivers door, I had to check the book.

Re: Top Speed

Hey i wish my car would do 150-160 like all of u are saying. I have an 00 camaro z-28 6-speed and it shuts off at 120 no lie. I can do all that in 5th gear i know it sucks.

You must have had the "H" rated (I think it was H rated) all season tires on yours. Any car that had the lower speed rated tires got the lower limiter.
