Z28 governor

I have heard the Z28's with 16" tires have a governor that don't let you go over 112mph. is this correct? can it be deactivated easily? and how?

Re: Z28 governor

Depends, Z's also had optional z rated tires. Not sure if the gov got set diff for that or not, but definately for the H rated tires.

You deactivate it w/a tune. Most tuners around here will turn it off along with SES lights for $50. Or you could go get a tune. A handheld tuner may work, but IMO they're wasted $.

Definately upgrade your tires and preferably brakes also if you plan on going faster.

The cars with RPO codes QBC or QEA are limited to 118 - QFK, QFZ and QLC are 160.

Hey man i am having the same trouble. I can get mine up to bout 115 is it and the it cuts off. I have 16 inch wheels and everything. I dont see how tires can have anything to do to with it going past 115, But eveyone on here says it does. I have had to sets of tires on mine and they both go the same speed. The ones i got now are z rated and it wont go no faster. So man i dont know?????

Re: Z28 governor

you could use a hypertech programmer to remove the speed limiter, but i think thats a waste of money..
check out www.madz28.com he can reprogram your computer and remove the speed limiter and also give you a power tune which nets you about 10-15 hp which has had a big difference on my LT1, and i could only imagine even more on a LS1..
Those are basically your options

The fact that all LS1 Z28s have 16" tires doesn't mean every Z28 is governed at 115, 118.

Your previous owner probably had a Z28 that didn't come with the z-rated tires and installed them after the factory tires wore out.

Z-Rated tires are meant to keep a car safe and planted to the road at high speeds, in fast cornering and effects how it rides. They're the only tire that should be used on any LT1 or LS1 car.

Re: Z28 governor

The factory isnt going to let your car go 160 if it came with tires that are rated to 118. Pretty much common sense to me. Can you imagine the lawsuites?

my 99z has been over 150 so its not limited but I didnt buy it new and I dont even know which wheels and tires it came with

Re: Z28 governor

112? If that's so i broke my governor.

It's set at 160 something, like 162, 165....

A tune can get rid of it.

Re: Z28 governor

Can someone please explain to me a valid reason to go faster than the govenor? The only reason I see is if you should be trapping higher then it cuts you off, and its killing 1/4 mile times.

No, tire ratings are based on the heat the rubber can tolerate, not road holding at hgher speeds.

Re: Z28 governor

ok guys wat i am wondering how can your tires tell u are going over 118. I have had 2 sets of tires and they both wont even let me go over 118, and the ones i got now are z-rated and didn
t change a thing. So myself personaly the tires dont have anything to do with it.

Re: Z28 governor

Thats because GM knew which cars were going to be equipped with lower rated tires and made the governer low enough so idiots wouldn't exceed the limits of the tires and have a blow out and try to sue GM for the driver's own stupidity.

Your car obviously didn't come equipped with the optional Z rated tires. How it was equipped from the factory is what counts as far as where the governor was set.

Re: Z28 governor

Like they said, if the original owner didn't get the Z rated tires then they set the governor to 118 I believe. All Z28's came with 16" rims but the 245's were Z rated and the 235's were NOT! So if you have 235's still then you need to upgrade all 4 tires first. Do not remove the speed governor before you get tires that can handle it. It's just not worth losing your life. After the tires get upgraded (if they havn't been allready) then you can use tools like LS1 edit, Predator or a speed shop to remove the speed governor.

Good luck and stay safe.
