Problems with short stick shifters
Problems with short stick shifters
Do any of you who use Lou's short stick with the stock shifter or other shifter, or use any other kind of shortened shifter, does/has this caused any unusual wear or damage to the M6 transmission? If so, what kind of problems developed?
I'm using a Lou's and love it. I would however like to have a Pro 5.0 for the sake of having shifter stops that way I could shift much harder and not worry about over travel and damaging shifter forks. The only negatives about shorter handles or shifters is you have more noise since theres no rubber between the handle and shifter and also you loose leverage so for some they can't shift as fast because of this. The only way a short shifter could cause problems and damage is if the shifter stops aren't properly adjusted. Adjusting them is very easy.
i've had a lou's stick on both my camaros (96 and my new 99) and have had no problems with them. i installed a short thow shifter from an SS (slp option) and the lou's and it makes a fantastic shifter for a good price...
Modded my stock unit.
Love it.
It is noisy as posted before.
The post about shift stops is questionable. The T56 is not supposed to need external shift stops. To my knowledge, aftermarket shifter instructions say to remove stops when installing on a T56.
Correct if I am wrong on this.

I believe in the stops because it protects the weak asp aluminum 3-4 shift fork.
I've got the Pro 5.0 right now with the Pro 5.0 stick ... I had it with a short stick but the short stick didn't angle to the left at the base of the stick the like the Pro 5.0's, making it difficult for me to get it in 6th and reverse ... or i may just be a weeny.
if ya end up with the pro 5.0 and think the stick is too tall .. go get 1/2" to 3/4" cut off the top .. and then go get the lou's short stick if you're still not satisfied.

Had the Pro 5.0 for 3 years now, only problem I had was the stick coming lose from the base, which I fixed with some locktight, never had a problem with it again.
Yes, you can cut quite a bit off the stock of the Pro 5.0
I too adjusted the stops in my shifter.. Doesn't hurt to have double protection.

I am very happy with my Lou's short stick. Despite serious hard use, the only thing that has broke on the car since new was the spring popped off the clutch pedal.
At one time I had a Ripper in my old '98 Z29 and the "factory" Hurst with the LSS in the T/A. I pulled the Ripper to be legal for a class I was racing in, and opted to sell the Ripper (I would have put it in the T/A if I preferred it). Just this weekend a friend that was driving my car asked what shifter it was, and is going to order a LSS for his T/A.
