is my fuel pump dying

tonight i was coming home and was sitting at the light in town and i could hear something whining. i get the car home and determine it was my fuel pump. the whining was very audible, not like they typical hum they make. it was steady too not just cycling. i shut the car off and turn the ignition to run and it cycled. when i started the car is started whining again, like i said before very audible. i went out a hour later to start it and it started fine but no loud whining just sounded normal. i just replaced fuel filter 2 days ago and fill the tank tonight, so them possibilities are out. is it time for a pump, and what should i get. the car is my daily ride and can't be down for long. any help would be appreciated

I don't have an answer for you, just wanted to say my 98 SS did the exact same thing about 6 months ago. It was after an 80-mile highway trip, but I don't know when the noise started because the T-tops were off.

I noticed it when I got off the highway, and like yours it still made the same noise after I restarted. A few hours later I started it again and the noise was gone.

I replaced the fuel filter that weekend as a precaution, but it hasn't done it since.

I'd also be curious if anyone knows what the issue was...
