Question Do I need a new fuel pump? It screams when doing hwy speeds. - Confsued

I have a '98 Z, auto with 4.10s. Not really a hwy machine....but I do need to drive on the express way sometimes. If I have to drive for say more than an hour at 70-80mph my fuel pump screams!

Its very very loud.

It only does this one on the hwy for a long period of time. I know my gear isn't set up for this type of driving (80mph = 3,000 RPS FYI), but I am working on getting my beater back on the road, so my Z won't have to do those types of trips anymore.

I just was wondering if it was a sign that the pump is going out, or is it just having a hard time keeping up the engine at those RPM's for so long?

I never hear my pump. I run 4:11's and drive the freeway daily.

Are you sure it's not the rear gears whinning?

No no, its not the gears. I do have a little bit of gear whine, but its a totaly different sound. Also, I know its not the gears because when I come to a stop the noise continues. Its coming from the rear of the car....the fuel pump.

I just don't know if its a sign that the pump is going out or what.

note: It only does it at prolonged hwy speeds. It doesn't happen around town.

Sorry to hear you are potentially screwed too.

My 1998 Z28 1LE has been making this noise since March. Took it to dealer today for radiator, he wants around $1050.00 for parts and labor to replace it. $500-$600 for pump plus 4.5-5 hours of labor. When I cringed at the price, the service guy said, "Hey, its a Camaro". For me the noise comes regardless of speed, its the time the pump is on and running that causes the problem. ITs just that usually you dont drive around in the city for an hour or more straight (time it usually takes to bring on the noise).

This is what I was told by a mechanic: "Noise is the pump getting too hot. If its hot outside, it will make the noise come about faster. If you have low fuel in the tank, the noise should come about faster, as there is less cool fuel to splash around on pump and cool it. If you jerk the car around (brake hard, turn hard), you will probably hear the noise go away for a second as fuel splashes onto the pump, but it will come back. Main problem is that this noise is usually an indication that the pump is on its way out. Unfortunately the failure is non-predictable and abrupt. You could be driving along a month from now with the noise at full volume as usual , and the pump will just go out and your car will have to be towed, or it could happen a year from now. You dont know."

I have no friends that could help me fix this to at least avoid the labor charge, so I have to part $1000. Hopefully you know someone who could help you install the pump.

Mine has been making this same noise for a year now. I say B.S. to your dealer. Just drive the thing until you notice a performance difference or it dies. Also, you can get an aftermarket pump (I think a Walbro...but don't quote me on that name) for a lot less. Take your car to a performance shop, or take the pump and your car to a Mom and Pop shop, and you will pay less than half what the dealer wants. The Camaro pumps are a PIA (you have to drop the axle), but still should only be 2 to 3 hours labor....

Good luck.

I get that noise too when driving on the highway for a long amount of time. It sounds like a hissing/whining type sound and comes from above the left rear tire.

I planned to just live with it after hearing the price. Problem is that any mechanic I ask agrees that the noise is very likely a signal that the pump will fail sooner than intended.

A called a few local shops, and their quotes were at most $50.00-$90.00 less. For that I would just assume get the benefit of the GM lifetime warranty on the pump.

The noise really annoys me and the potential to be stranded is not something I care to have to think about as I have a long drive (10 hours alone) to and from college on holidays. So for me, I am biting the bullet and fixing it. Plus, if I wanted a POS that made odd noises and had a good potential to leave me stranded, I would have bought an Escort. But thats just me.
