Ported throttle body a wasted mod?!

I had a ported throttle body on a previous vehicle and I remember having great throttle response and roasting the tires at will. However, I also remember struggling to get a good 60' at the track with it as well. I'm thinking about either porting the TB or buying a ported one for my car, but I'm just not sure that it's worth it for the reason I mentioned above. After all, what good is an extra 5hp or so if you're losing it at the launch?

Discussion?
Ideas?

It really won't make a difference unless you step into some of the bigger mods like a heads/cam setup.

yeah...and a ported TB won't be the deciding factor on whether or not you can "roast the tires at will"...or get bad launches due to traction issues.

Really?

I found that the increased throttle response made it harder to roll into the throttle when launching which made it harder to keep from breaking loose on launches.

I think you need to be at least a full bolt on car before you start looking at a TB. And then, you cant go too big.

you REALLY think that 3-5hp...if that at low rpm...is going to affect whether you break traction?

there are a dozen other factors that could have affected your traction.

I don't really think that you see any actual HP gains until you hit the upper RPMs. I was refering to how the feel of the pedal changes. Since the throttle body flows better, the car seems to want to jump in a good bit faster than with a stock unit on. I'm guessing from your response that you've never had any issues trying to get down a launch after putting on a ported TB. From that perspective, maybe I just suck at driving?

"Increased throttle response" is an illusion. You either have more HP/torque, which makes the car more responsive, or you don't. The rate at which the throttle opens is not the issue. Just force the pedal to the floor faster with a heavier foot, or put a weaker spring on the TB if you think that's going to make difference.
