OBD-I computer not control OBD-II car's A/C system?

1997 Firebird, converted from OBD-II to OBD-I.

After getting the car back together, took it to get an alignment and my rotors turned. While I was there I asked about the A/C. They tested my system, said it held a vacuum, and that it could be filled. Had them fill it.

They said it wouldn't turn on unless they grounded the relay, and asked if I had an aftermarket computer. Sort of. OBD-I in there.

Is there something in the OBD-I computer that is missing to kick on the A/C relay? Or is this known, and I have to run the A/C off a toggle switch?

Thank you.

There is no difference in a/c operation that I am aware of. Check for the presence of an a/c code. It has to be cleared (or PCM reset) to allow compressor operation.

Re: OBD-I computer not control OBD-II car's A/C system?

I have this code:

71 a/c evaporator temperature sensor circuit low

That's probably it then? I ***umed I had that code because I didn't have a freon charge.

I feel dumb asking how to clear it, as long as I've been here.

66-69 will disable a/c operation, but it does not say 71 will. Reset the PCM by pulling the PCM BAT fuse for about 30 seconds.

The evaporator sensor is on the evaporator coil under the dash.

Thanks Rob I will give that a shot. Hopefully it takes care of it.
