How to turn Off Service Engine Soon Light?

Hi Guys,

My SES light is on. I've been looking for an article describing how to turn it off. I'm thinking there must be some way to turn it off relatively painlessly?

Does anyone know how to disable SES light?

Edit: 1997 LT1 Firebird Formula

Thanks!

Ivan

Find out what is causing it and fix it. You will need to pull the trouble codes, and fix/replace the appropriate part or whatever is causing the problem. Depending on what year your car is, autozone may be able to retreive the trouble codes for you.

Autozone can pull the codes in a '97. You need to repair whatever has caused it to come on.

Yeah, that P0300 can be a real bear to track down.

You'd think bears would be easy to track down. i mean, they're kind of ... big.

Thanks so much for the responses.

Do you know how I can disable the light so that it doesn't go on without fixing the codes?

Thanks!

Well you would have to scan for codes to find out which code is causng the SES light, and the have it programmed out through a PCM tune, and this isnt even guaranteed to work depending on what is causing the SES light; plus, this way could possibly be more expensive then just fixing the problem. Your best bet is to just scan for codes and fix the problem.

Aamco is also advertising for a free readout of the SES codes . . .

I'd have the code(s) read, write it down so you won't forget, ask them to clear it. Post the code(s) if the light comes on again after another scan, might be something easy, might even be throwing more than one code...I've thrown P0300 a couple times over the years, and just reset it.

Even if you turn the light off, it will come back on unless whatever caused it is taken care of. It's best to go ahead and take care of the problem, because it could be something that could cause more problems and cost mo money. Get the codes pulled and post them here. We'll try and help.

Well, that's living dangerously. Let's say that the code in question is for a "lean O2 sensor" code and knowing that such things as a failing fuel pump, leaking intake manifold gasket or even a clogged fuel filter can come from just that eventual diagnosis....why risk an eventual ruined engine because of that intake mani leak or a roasted valve from running the engine lean?

Your call.

One more thing, if you have inspections, you fail automatically if that SES light doesn't come on during that dash light test when the inspector turns the key before starting the car up.

Re: How to turn Off Service Engine Soon Light?

Since I only use the stock PCM for the speedo and idle air control and there are a bunch of things like the injectors, MAF, knock sensor, etc that are no longer connected to it, I simply removed the wire from pin D9 of the PCM.

I'd agree with others though.... if you're still running the stock PCM, it makes sense to keep the light connected, and correct the problem.

you can always disconnect the battery for a minute and then reconnect it. it will clear the PCM and your engine light will turn off. but as soon as the computer picks it up again the light with come back on. Best bet is to find out the problem and get it fixed.
