on my 93 its stuck pass on full on the fuel gauge no matter even when it is bone empty.

someone told me it was a bad ground and another told me it had an open circuit.

what would i have to do to fix this problem?

 

could be the lever sensor on your fuel pump assembly is jammed fully up

 

Very typical for the float to get stuck or have issues in our setups. Only way to fix it is to pull the pump and bucket. Do a seach, tons of threads on this very issue.

 

if you've done a fuel pump swap on these cars before you know what needs to be done

trap door method is the best/easiest imo, might as well upgrade the pump while you're in there, considering you've ran it dry a few time(from your post I assume this), who knows how much life is left in it

 

well thats the thing the pump was replaced right before i but it, i think he may have messed something up.

but if i pull it i could just fix the stuff on the pump? or do i have to buy a whole new pump?

 

To fix the float (level sensor) you have to pull the whole pump and bucket. Might as well go ahead and replace the pump again while you are at it as it is good insurance. Never know what that guy threw in there - used pump, etc...

alright over the weekend i did the procedure that shoebox has, and there was no reading at all of the resistance, but when i did the ground check on the purple wire the tank went to empty.

What would be the next step? i believe that one of the wires are disconnected up on the fuel pump does that sound right?

 

by no reading of resistance do you mean it said somehing like 0L? If so that means infinite resistance so it would show past full all the time. The switches shows 1ish ohms is empty so anything less then 50 is empty as well aka when you grounded out the purple wire to the black wire you made it read 0 ohms, or shorted (No resistance). therefore it went straight to empty. so you Most likely have an open on the purple wire somewhere from the fuel level switch to the connector that you removed (On the switch side not the gauge side). So for you remove the pump and check to see if it's plugged in correctly.
