Firewall

Where is the firewall located on Firebirds? There is some instruction I got with my foglights that has their own switch and it said to stick it from the engine bay through a firewall to the driver dash? I tried looking for something to go thru, but it's all sealed up. Any help with be great. Thank you!

Re: Firewall

Firewall is the general term for the piece of metal that seperates the cockpit from the engine bay. If you shine a light there, you can see some small holes with grommets that GM uses to pass wires through. You can use those. Be sure to seal the grommet back up (i use rtv) or you could get a leak when it rains.

Re: Firewall

Without telling us the year of your car, its virtually impossible to give you specific instructions on how to get a wire through the firewall. Its a good idea to create a "signature" including basic info about your car - year, model, engine, tranny, major mods, etc. That way people will be able to help you better.

Re: Firewall

The only route through the firewall that I've been able to use is the grommet behind the PCM. I have lubed the neck of this rubber seal with Vaseline many times to pass wire through to the passenger side of the firewall and then fish them out on the cockpit side of the car at the back of the dash. You have to pop two fasteners to bring the front of the knee bolster down in order to get a hold of the passed wiring.

Re: Firewall

Ok I did my signature. Sorry for the little info. Anyways, it's just a slow v6 firebird, with mainly suspension work done to it. I was thinking I probably have to cut the wires because the switch is pretty freakin' big. It's like the size of a golf ball. Then solder it back together. Thanx for all the help guys.

Re: Firewall

The switch does not have a screw terminal or a slip-on friction connector that holds the wire to the switch?

Grommets do much more than keep the rain out, they protect the wire insulation from being cut by the sheet metal which could cause the wire to short to ground.

I always leave a bit of slack on both ends, dollop RTV where the wire is going to be near the metal on all sides, and make sure there is enough around it to keep it in one place.
