Fans wont stop running
Fans wont stop running
I cant figure this out. My electric fans will not quit running on a 94 a4. Soon as you start the car they turn on and stay on. No SES light or anything.
Car has an aftermarket temp gauge and it only even reads... 185? the stock 180 thermostat is in it.
Any fuses to check for blown that would cause them to stay on? I dont even know where to start. Thanks guys
(still get no heat either..)

Re: Fans wont stop running
There are codes that do not turn on the SES light. Scan it anyway.
The coolant temp gauge sensor has nothing to do with the PCM, and nothing to do with the fan control. The PCM controls the fans based on the coolant temp sensor in the water pump housing. Is it possible when the aftermarket coolant temp gauge was added, they spliced into that sensor? That would screw things up pretty good.

Re: Fans wont stop running
ill take a look. on a 94, where can i get this scanned? paperclip dont work since like 90 or something right? i have a cable and my laptop but thats for my 95. damn these cars and all their different cables
Re: Fans wont stop running
tried to get it scanned. scanner couldnt connect to the pcm. now i remember awhile ago i was having issues on my 95... is there a fuse to check for this? i need to find diagram on shoebox site and im going to check the wires at pcm and at the connector for power
Re: Fans wont stop running
ok i have a feel schucks scanner just doesnt work with lt1's. Damnit. Ill look into purchasing a cable for a 94. i might as well buy one for a 96+ as well so i have all 3 cables lol
Re: Fans wont stop running
actually, one question... i can use my 95 cable and just use jumpers right? im assuming thats possible. that way i dont have to buy a cable and i cant try to get this thing solved and finish the post with a damn answer
Re: Fans wont stop running
If you have a 95 16-pin OBD-I cable, and it normally connects your 95 to an OBD-I scanner, it will work. Just reverse the jumpers shown in Shoebox's photo.
93 was the last year to scan the LT1 by shorting the pins. Its not a fuse problem because there is no 12V power to the 12-pin OBD-I connector.

Re: Fans wont stop running
ok got my cable all hooked up and ran a datamaster. No codes or anything of the sort. everything looks great on datamaster.
however i have found out a little more that might help solve this issue. the fans do shut off.. if i turn the heat to off! they always stay on in any selection, of course all the ac ones and any single heating selection on that dial and the fans stay on. i turn it to off and they shut off within 30 seconds.
now i checked the fan with datamaster, i turned heat off, let fans shut off, let car warm up to see if the fans come on normal. they do. so i have some kind of issue with my heater dials? anyone ever had this issue?

Re: Fans wont stop running
Sounds like a problem with the AC/heat selector ****. They will stay on in defrost mode as well, since that uses the AC to dry the air sent to the defrost vents.
Re: Fans wont stop running
think maybe its just stuck on ac mode or something? and thats why its never blowing warm? could that be a possibility? guess maybe ill try to find a new unit and install that? or could a vacuum line cause it all?
Re: Fans wont stop running
Maybe your heater core is plugged causing no heat. Not related to the fans worth a flush.

Re: Fans wont stop running
Try unplugging the AC/heat function selector switch.
Shoebox has a wiring diagram of the selector. As you can see from the diagram, the AC runs in every position except "off", "vent" and "heater". If the AC/fans turn off only when you switch it to "off", and continue to run when its in "vent" or "heater" mode, its got to be the switch. Does the AC run all the time when the fans run? The AC being on all the time would explain why your heater doesn't run hot. Again, its pointing to the switch. Did you take the time to check it when I pointed it out in the post above?
