cooling fan problem
cooling fan problem
question hope someone can help. 95 camaro z-28 5.7l my problem started when cooling fans came on service engine light came on. i had a mechcanic scan it and it just said voltage inconsistance. now cooling fans wont come on at all even with a/c on. i changed the engine coolant temp switch checked the relays, fans both work and checked the wiring for a short. everything is ok. any answers? is it my ecm or bcm? thanks for any help
Re: cooling fan problem
Have you had it scanned for codes again? What was the original code - there is none that reads "voltage inconsistance".... it would always have the name of a device included in the description. It's normal for the fans to come on with some DTC codes.
What does the dash coolant temp gauge indicate the engine is running at? Fans won't come on until 226*F. Should come on with the A/C. Does the A/C actually work? Verified?
The 95 does not have a BCM. That was implemented in the 96's.

Re: cooling fan problem
i took it to advance auto but their scanner could not read it,it runs at about 210 F. the a/c does work and is working now the clutch pulls in but the fans do not come on but they will come on if you jumper the a/c pressure switch. thanks fred
Re: cooling fan problem
The reason they couldn't scan it is because your 95 has an OBD-I PCM, and an OBD-II style 16-pin ALDL connector. The shop sees the 16-pin connectors, attempts to use an OBD-II scanner and it won't connect.
You need an OBD-I scanner with the correct 12-pin to 16-pin adapter, or you need to use jumper wires, as Shoebox shows:

Re: cooling fan problem
Not sure you have demonstrated that you even have a problem. Do the fans turn on when the coolant temp exceeds 226*F? Bob explained why they may not be coming on with the A/C. Scanning it may indicate whether you have a problem or not.
You indicated you already had it scanned, but you posted a code description that does not exist. Go back to the mechanic and ask him to tell you the exact code. He should do that for free, since he didn't bother to give you the right info the first time.
