1997 Camaro SS convertible....How rare??
I've just bought a 1997 Camaro SS Convertible.
Its black with tan interior and top.
6-speed, slp exhaust, hurst shifter and torsen...
I think it must be a pretty rare car or what do you guys think?
Another thing.....the z-r1 wheels are 16 inchers....never seen that before, i thought they came in 17 only....?? maybe it's an option on a convertible??? The car is in exellent shape and has only 40k miles on the clock, i love it!!!
Thanks ya'll
Ps. read on the net that there where only 230 something ss convertibles made in 1997....don't know if it's true

I dont know about that number, but whether or not its real special, its still a real nice car. My friend has a 97 30th Anniversary SS vert. Thats a real nice car. And yeah, in 96 and 97, the SS verts only came with 16 inch wheels, not 17's. That kinda sucks, but oh well. Anyways, congrats on the car.
Not to burst your bubble but 97 SS Vert's are not rare by any means.........at least not what I would consider "rare".
There are less of them than say.......my car.........but way more than the 30 Ann. white/orange stripes SS's - only 1000 made. Certinally nowhere near as rare as a 97 SS Ann. Ed. LT4 - only 100 made.
All the same - you have a nice car there.
The rims that the SS verts come with are not ZR1's......they are just the standard issue 97 Z28 wheels.
Same as on my ride.
Happy driving.

This site lists the build numbers for '96 and '97. Not sure how accurate these numbers are.
How low of a production does a car need before it is considered "rare"?

if your in sweeden, the car was imported from north america, i wonder if its a canadian car or an american car. Being a canadian car would make it a bit rarer, as they hardly sent any ss's up here.
I am almost 100% sure that 1997 SS Camaros with T-tops or hardtops came with 17" ZR1 style rims while the convertibles got the 16" ZR1 style rims. So I think your car has its original wheels on it.
Great car, I hope you'll be happy with it.
My numbers are a little different but not by much. In 1997 there were 485 SS convertibles, 271 M6's, and 214 auto's. Of these 136 were Anniv. "special edition"(white and orange).
Of the millions of cars on the road I would consider these to be fairly rare. I'll bet you don't see another one in Sweden?
The SS's were modifide by SLP(Street Legal Performance). But the convertibles only got the "stock" Z-28 suspension with the standard Z-28, 16" five spoke wheels.
On your drivers side door jam, there should be an SLP sticker that list the option installed by SLP. These options are what make your car an SS.
Your SS hood and rear spoiler will not be listed as they came on all SS's. Things like Performance Exhaust, Hurst Shifter, SS Floor Mats, Engine Oil Cooler, etc. should be listed.
If you join http://www.camarossoa.org/ you can get a Letter Of Authenticity and find out your SLP build number.

237 acording to them.
I think the 96 and somewhat the 97 SS's to be a fairly rare 4th gen camaro, 96's moreso then 97s.
