16 Volt Battery

Does anyone have any knowledge of this for a daily driven z28? I know 16 v would be alot better, alot of racers are taking to this so they don't have to run alternators but. I wonder what it would do to the rest of the circuits? They are all saying that this will give the ignition a better and hotter spark. I hope someone knows more then what i have read or is doing this already, i always thought the 12v system was....weak...

Re: 16 Volt Battery

The advantages of using a 16 volt battery only apply to high performance/racing applications. You don't have any of the issues a 16 volt battery can improve. You don't need a 'better and hotter spark". The stock ignition system provides all the voltage a basically stock engine can use. The stock fuel pump, injectors and solenoids all work perfectly fine at 12 volts. The only 4th Gen I've ever seen using a 16 volt battery was making 1,350 HP with huge boost, and was pretty much a "track only" car. A 1,350 HP engine, with huge boost needs more voltage to fire the plugs.... your engine doesn't.

How would you modify the stock alternator to maintain the charge in a 16 volt battery? Excessive voltage (17.1 V) can set a code in the PCM.

Good reading - note paragraph on possible damage to components not designed for 16 volts:
