Problem with opti rotors?
Hello all! I have had two OEM rotor failers due to the metal tang falling off and I was woundering if anybody has found a solution for it. I have thought about riveting it on but that would cause an inbalance. I don't want to get an MSD cap and rotor because of the cost. Has any of you figured out a way to keep these things on? I don't think you have this problem unless your spinning your engine over 6 grand.
I have had 2 opti's fail that way. Copper contact was released due to plastic fastener failure. The second opti (a NEW gm unit) did the same in only 3 weeks of driving. Since I run a MSD 6a and 8202 coil, there is alot of heat energy inside causing plastic fastener failure. Summit replaced the opti, and, I dissected it and installed a 1/8 alum rivet in both copper contact holes. I drilled a 1/8 hole. Guess I voided the warantee, but, I knew it would fail again. The front rivet had to be filed down to a smaller length to clear the internal cover. This was easy. It has been running great for 2+ years. I rev to 6800 rpm. I have also removed the vent tube check and filter for more cooling. They are highly restrictive. (App... 97ss 383 - D1 M6) Hope this helps. B.

The opti vent system is not meant for cooling at all. It is to purge moisture and ozone from the unit. The hose is supposed to be restricted to keep too much vacuum from being applied to the opti. Too much vacuum can actually cause the cap to be sucked in and cause the rotor to crash into it. It's happened to people. Glad yours is ok, but it might not be the best advice for everyone.
With an open vent, there will be less pressure differential across the opti cap. Resulting in less force to deflect the surface. If the idea is not agreed as a confident solution, throw it out. The value and beauty of camaroz28.com site as an open idea forum.
