Fuel Pump

Is there instructions somewhere on how to change the fuel pump? Both by lowering the tank and by cutting an access hole in the hatch area. Any help would be greatly appreciated

the correct way to change the pump is reove the exhaust after the rearened, remove the tin shield, panhard bar, fuel cap. lower the tank on the passenger side and you can squeeze in there to change the pump without complete removal. it is recommended that you remove the tank and clean it out because you will be surprised at how much junk is in there. do not forget to replace your fuel filter. that is a quick way and be prepared to get frustrated and pissed off but it can be done. it also helps with a hoist. good luck

My fuel pump is supposed to arrive Tuesday ( I bought the racetronix pump), so I won't be able to start on it until Wednesday night. I am supposed to drive my car back home Friday night and fly back Sunday. Is Wed. and Thurs. night enough time to change the pump?

Certainly depends on your skill level Here's a link to give you an idea of what's involved: http://www.bfranker.badz28.com/fbody/fuelpump.htm

I was able to do my fuel pump in about 8 hours total, and I had no idea what I was doing part of the time . I dropped the tank, with the car on jackstands. One piece of advice, unbolt the brake line bracket from the frame where the soft lines branch off to the wheels (don't disconnect the brake lines themselves!). This allows you to drop the rear end a lot more, giving you more room to pull the tank.

I have decided, due to lack in time, to just cut an access hole. I bought my fuel pump from racetronix with all the wiring upgrades and everything, so I was wondering how hard is it to do all those upgrades?

Well... I got the new fuel pump in and wiring harness pluged in. The fuel pump only took like an hour and a half and the wiring harness took like 30 min. Overall it was a pretty easy job.

LT1 Fuel Pump Replacement

First, disconnect the neg batt terminal. Then, relieve the pressure from the fuel rail with a fuel pressure gauge. Next, siphon the fuel from the tank with a hand pump. Any parts store should have one. Hint: raise the rear axle and these pumps work easy. Now you're safe to drop the axle, muffler and heat shield to gain access to the tank.

There is a red wire (with black single connector) near the PCM passenger side in the motor compartment (mp). This is the fuel pump bypass. Connect the wire to the positive 12+ side of the batt with a shunt wire (can be done by hand). Fuel pump will run and drain the tank. Don't forget to disconnect line @ the fuel rail and dump to a gas can. Ignition can be off, and, you will here the pump start running. Don't let the pump run when tank is dry (it will change sound when fuel is low and not being picked up by pump).I have a 97 camaro also, and, I cut an access hole thru the top of the rear pan. Fabbed a cover. I cut the hole to the pan support rails for maximum access. I take the pump(s) (I have two) out every year. Very fast access (about 15 minutes) and less disassembly (just my opinon). To each their own method. (97ss 383 - D1 M6) B.
