Wastegate question

This is kind of an odd question. When I am looking at my wastegate holding it in my hand the the valve or whatever you want to call it isnt sealed. There is probably .050" around the diameter where i would think it would seat to keep the gasses in the exhaust pipe. Isnt this just going to be a big exhaust leak even though its supposed to be closed???

Its a tial 44mm.

Pics?

I have a turbonetics and the lip always looks shiny and the center sooty. But there is no gap.

Can you work it by hand a few times and see if it closes up?

I would call tial if not.

Im trying to get pics but the computer isnt cooperating with me.

It doesnt even look like its supposed to close completely. the whole valve is smaller than than the inlet. and i took it apart and its hitting a positive stop.

Looking at it more closely, it looks like the flange has a male collar that it will seat against, Ill have to wait and see when the flange comes in.

On the 44mm gates (any many other gates), the seat is machined into the flange. That lip is the seat and will fill that gap.

Realquick, I was thinking about mounting my wastegate in the cross over pipe like where you mount yours, but I am worried about it being able to regulate boost to only 6 PSI with its only venting one bank. Im going to be keeping it to about 6 psi for a while.

Think I will have any problems with a t67 turbo?

Should work fine.

We can argue over heat-pressure-energey-expansion-brits cooter - whatever it is that actually drives the turbo -

Exhaust gasses are going to get out of there no matter how it can - and generally will prefer the easiest path, which would be the big open hole without a turbine. The wastegate can open a lot - generally it doesn't need to be wide open to regulate boost, so in your case it may just have to open a bit more but it should still regulate like it is supposed to.

First, I thought about it again, and the flange and seat are two seperate pieces if I remember correctly. When you get your flange, you should see a counterbore (recess) where the seat would sit on the flange. If you dont get the seat with the flange, then order it.

A 44mm wastegate will easily be able to keep you at 6psi... Justin was running 5psi with his setup. BTW, Tial makes a 3.5psi spring... you could try that first and see what happens.

Cool, just what I wanted to hear, I beleive the wastegate has a 5 psi spring in it now, ill probably leave it at that for a while. Ill keep an eye on my boost gauage.

Im getting anxious, hopefully I will drive the car this weekend

With any wastegate, I would unbolt the top and check the spring. Remember, the top is loaded, so you need to hold the top down when unbolting. Oh, and watch your teeth

Well I took it apart, and there was a spring in there (obviously) but how do I know what it is by looking at it. It wasnt any color that i noticed, just bare.

Can you compress it with your hand pretty easily? What is the OD of the spring and what is the wire thickness?
