Tuning. What would you do?
Tuning. What would you do?
I have been pretty set on going to the dyno to get my LT1+9lbs tuned by a pro. Stock motor with bolt ons and boost.
Then, I started thinking(which may or may not be good). The tuner charges 500 for a blower tune. Pretty much an all day thing. He doesn't make more than one appointment per day so he won't be rushed in finishing my car to make time for someone else. Plus, in the future, he will do free updates although I would have to pay for dyno time. I have heard good things about his work and he has been mentioned in magazines. But, I realized that I could buy a wide band setup and use the track for my dyno. It wouldn't be as precise as a number from the rollers.
I have tunercat and have flashed the pcm many times but not touching the a/f. Basically, what would you guys recommend? I could buy the wide band and learn to tune, or leave it to a pro?

Re: Tuning. What would you do?
I personally am a big fan of letting someone reputable tune the car. You can do the fine tuning at the track. The $500 is money well spent if the guy knows what he's doing. In addition, you get to spend the day w/ him and you can pick his brain. You will learn a lot.

Especially on a blower car, having a reputable professional tune the car will get optimal performance and will ensure a longer life of the engine. Especially on a stock motor, don't blow it up with a crappy tune.
Re: Tuning. What would you do?
Yeah, I hear 9 is destructive. I have had the blower on since July with no problems on the stock tune. Would there be any signs preceding the explosion? Like not 1 second before but signs like burnt plugs? I changed the stock plugs for the TR6s a couple weeks ago and the old ones looked perfect. I also don't see any knock retard (more than 3 that is). I had that on motor.
I pullied it down(using the biggest one I have) but I couldn't get it any lower than 9.

Just like Rich said, and just plan for the rebuild. I wish our cars could be like LS1 cars and live a long healthy life with 9psi but that aint goona happen. Not a question of if it will blow but when. Good luck.
