Setting up th ebottom end properly for boost
Setting up th ebottom end properly for boost
O.k. I've decided that since I already have my LT-1 motor torn down to the shortblock, i'm looking to beef it up a little more. I am going to replace the pistons with forged low compression slugs, and the rod bolts with ARP studs. The assembly will be balanced. This is a street driven car on the weekends, so it must meet emissions and be well mannered. It won't be revved past 6000 rpms.
The car is equiped as follows:
Vortech V-1 S trim cetrifuigal charger currently pumping out 6lbs of boost
Hooker Long tube coated headers
SPEC Stage III clutch assy.
Ported/ polished LT1 heads (in the works, so I do not have flow numbers yet)
Custom cam match to the head flow numbers
My questions are as follows:
-what brand of pistons would be most appropriate for this set up?
-How much boost will the rods and crank handle? (it will be the stock unit)
-what compression ratio should I go with?
-would it be worth it to over bore the cylinders to acheive 355 c.i. and what would the drawbacks be?
-Am I stupid for not replacing the rods, instead of just the bolts (if so, what rod)?
-Has anyone hear of cryotreating and would it strenthen my rotating assembly?
-Are there any other serious weak links in the short block I should address?
I am somewhat limited on the budget, so top of the line go-fast parts are not in the plan. If anyone has extra parts that would fit into the paramiters of my project, I'd be interested in discussing a purchase as well. Thanks for the input!
