Question What is the ideal transmission cooler for our cars?

Street driven 95 Z28, may see occasional (infrequent) track use.

What's the best cooler? I'm going to order one tonight or tomorrow.

Oh, I forgot. We never used to have this many offshoots of forums.

Yep, B&M 24K is a favorite.

I talked to Frank @ CPT and he told me a fin and tube transmission cooler would not cool worth a crap and you should really buy a stacked plate transmission cooler for cooling. Just passing along some information that I thought was probly pretty good.

I took his post to mean the B&M was not a good one...

Tru-Cool 4490 is the one we use on all of our high stall F-Bodies. It's the biggest (physically) that will fit in the space in front of the radiator. The measurements are 12"x11"x3/4". This cooler is made by a company named Long. Long also makes B&M coolers. By buying it with the Tru-Cool name, you're getting the same quality as a B&M, but you're getting a cooler twice the size of the B&M for the same dollar.

BTW, there's absolutely nothing wrong with the B&M coolers, either. They're both "stacked plate" coolers.

Fin and plate cooler construction
Includes 12 volt high flow fan
Pressure tested to 200psi
Units include 1/2 NPT fittings & thermal switch
Easily adaptable to steel braided lines

The newest addition to B&M's line of SuperCooler fluid coolers is the Hi-Tek cooling system. Fitted with a high quality 12 volt electric fan and built-in mounting brackets, these coolers handle tough cooling jobs. They include a thermal switch to activate the fan when the fluid temperature reaches 175 degrees F. Can be used for racing, RV and street performance vehicles. Suitable for all fluid cooling needs including: automatic transmission fluid, engine oil, differential fluid, power steering and tubrocharger oil in circle track, road racing, off-road, tractor pulling and monster truck applications.

70297 - Hi-Tek Cooling System 13-1/2"x9"x3-1/2" with 9-1/2" diameter fan.
(Specs: Fan flows 500 cfm, draws 6 amps, weight 7lbs.)
70298 - Hi-Tek Cooling System 10"x7-1/2"x4" with 7" diameter fan.
(Specs: Fan flows 350 cfm, draws 6 amps, weight 5lbs.)

Definitely the B&M "Hi-Tek". Mount it anywhere, as the fan insures airflow. Very compact but big cooling capacity. I highly reccomend it.

That's the one I have more my 3500 stall. Kinda overkill mabey but it gets pretty hot here. I cant wait to get it on and try it out. I wonder will it fit ok and what other people using it thinks. Ive never seen it on another car.

I mounted mine under the passenger side headlight. Just trimmed the black plastic panel to make room. Works great.

Re: What is the ideal transmission cooler for our cars?

Thanks for all your thoughts guys.

I guess part of the reason I asked was because I wasn't sure if it was possible to "over cool" the 4L60E. Obviously judging by your answers it must not be.

It would be neat to have three of those Hi-Tek B&M coolers; one for engine oil, tranny AND power steering all at the same time.

I just put a Perma-Cool 22K GVW cooler on my car.

I'm sure it's more than enough for anything I do and at $50, you can't go wrong.
