Tranny cooler with built in fan - overkill?

I was at the track last weekend and pulled the dipstick out of the tranny.

A little bit of smoke/steam came out of the tube. With the higher stall and a good shot of nitrous... I think the tranny was getting pretty hot.

I already have a tranny cooler and a deeper "finned" pan. I was thinking of replacing my cooler with this one:

It looks like a great piece... and the fan turns on when it hits 160 degrees. I'm thinking that it would be really helpful at the track, to cool the tranny between runs... but also on the street, on those hot days.

Anyone have experience with this type of setup... do you guys think it's overkill?

I run a fan assisted Perma-Cool trans cooler on my TH400, and it keeps things cool. With the thermostat on the one you pictured, it should work fine. I have mine mounted where the bottom of a CAI would normally sit.

That's an interesting setup. My current cooler is mounted about 2 inches in front of my rad.... it may be a good idea to move it, to get more air through the rad as well.

I'll have to think of a good place for it as my CAI would get in the way where you placed yours

First thing - Is the trans built to handle the power? If things are slipping then it creates more heat. Do you know what temp the trans is at?
I have that exact cooler in my car and no cooler in the rad. Even on 30+ days and making 3 passes in a row the trans doesn't get over 175 and the fan comes on at 180 pretty sure. I also have the Derale deep pan and I used 3/8" cooler lines instead of 5/16". It was a PITA to get it to fit........I no longer have a washer fluid bottle

The trans is built for a 9 sec car from the premier tranny builder in Toronto. Nevertheless... after a high 10second pass with a loose converter, and on the spray with a heavy car... I suspect the tranny was getting a little warm.

As for the temp... I'm not sure as I don't have a gauge. I was initially considering getting one but I figured it wouldn't help since I had now way of cooling it even if it got too hot.... on the other hand this fan/rad setup with a built in temp sensor would allow the car to cool itself without me having to monitor it to much.

If you have Datamaster you can monitor the trans temp with that. I would see what its at before going to the work of changing coolers. I've never had the fan come on with mine. I don't have nitrous but my stall is pretty loose and my cars heavy.

Good point... I didn't realize you could log Tranny Temp. I guess I rarely ever log my tranny values, as I haven't had any issues with that aspect of my program.

I'll have to do it the next time I'm at the track in a few weeks.

Don't replace yours, just add the new on into the mix. You can never have too much cooling for your trans. I have 3 coolers on my car, stock in to 2 big aftermarket coolers.

How did you get enough room for that? I have a single 11x12" cooler and it's tight.

That may be a little of overkill. While increasing the reliability of the vehicle, I'm also trying to reduce the complexity of it so fewer things can go wrong.

If I have one cooler with a fan that can keep the tranny at 160-180 degrees, another cooler inline won't really make any difference as the temps would stay the same. I also really like the fact of having the fan and a one cooler so that the tranny can get up to the proper tranny temp faster... than stay at that temp all the time... similar to how our rads work with a thermostat. Tranny's hate the heat... but they don't like being really cold as well.

That's the reason I like my Tru-Cool 4490 cooler. It has bypass tubes along the top that allow the transmission oil to bypass the cooler when it's still cold, yet the 11x12 stacked plate design allows for monstrous cooling potential. I don't have a fan on it, but my radiator fans turn on at 190° and 200°.

Put it to you this way, I had the radiator at 240° this summer during stop and go traffic in a heat wave. The transmission cooler had temps at 188°.

I bypassed the radiator.

Well I ran the car at the track again this lat weekend. It was a cool 48 degrees so the car was getting a lot of cooling.

The tranny temp never got higher than 150 degrees. That was spraying a 200 shot and getting 10.59 and 10.60 1/4m times. (see sig for vid )

So I think I may be ok for now. I was worried as I pulled the dipstick out when I was at the track last week, and a little steam/smoke came out... it is probably ok though.

I'll have to check when the weather gets warmer out there next summer. I didn't realize you could check the tranny temp with TTS Datamaster as I rarely log the tranny info.

We'll see next summer.

Good Vid. Very nice times, and a good looking car. It's great how the cooler air really wakes a motor, isn't it?
