AUto shift linkage problem

Stepson went to drive away in his 89Z auto(700R I assume)put it in gear nothing, moved lever up and down nothing. I don't think it's the tranny but the linkage. It was late, dark and cold last night and I didn't feel like jacking it up and crawling underneath. What's an easy way to get it into neutral so I can push it out of were it's parked until we can work on it. It's right in the way at the end of the driveway.

Well if your linkage is shot, then the only way to shift the tranny is by crawling underneath and moving the switch manually.

Is it on the side of the tranny? If so which side? Do I need any special tools or just pliers or vice grips?

One time a buddy of mine had the shifter cable bracket come loose and fall off the tranny, where it bolts up! He could pull the shifter back into lower gears, but couldn't get it anywhere beyond Drive or Neutral . He drove to my place and we jacked it up ... immediately saw the bracket hanging down!

They bolt onto the DRIVER'S SIDE of the tranny pan (using a couple of the tranny pan bolts).

If there's not a problem with that, then you'll need to try and move the shifter linkage manually. If you can physically "select" a gear, but still nothing happens?? Probably tranny time .

Thanks, I'm off work tomorrow and that is one of my projects.
