Which stall converter?

Which one is good for use with a cc305 or cc306 cam? About how much do they run. My motor is fixing to be out of the car so I might as well do this with the cam. Thanks!!

Depends on what you want to do with the car really. If I were in your shoes and were using it as a street car (I don't know if you are or not) I would go for a 3000 stall (or a bit higher). A vigilante convertor (one of the better ones) will run you around $700 not counting installation.

Re: Which stall converter?

I bought my Vigi used for 415 shipped, then another 250 for install. It's a Vigi 3200, perfect on the street. I was going to run it with a CC305.

Edge is a little over $500 NEW because you are not paying for the extra machining and weight of the billet(overkill) cover on the Vig or Yank, they will help you pick stall and will not build the thing till they have all the info they need. I would guess they will recommend 3200 or thereabouts.
Oh and guys read his post again, the motor will be out so the install shouldn't cost anything, it will be nothing more than pulling the old one off sliding the new one on and filling the tranny back up(which should be checked anytime under the hood anyway).

Re: Which stall converter?

I've been building racing automatics for 14 years. A shop I worked at for 7 of those has it's own converter shop. This gave me the luxury of seeing what's inside most manufactuerers converters, and seeing what works and lasts. Based on this I can only suggest 2 converters...PTC (ProTorque, and Precicision Industries (Vigilante). I would seriously advise against the Yank.

I take it you've never had a converter baloon? This happens as a result of high line pressure. Billet/cast converter fronts prevent this from happening. They're also alot stronger.

Re: Which stall converter?

Just wondering why would you advise against the Yank converters? I heard they are one of the best. Thanks

Re: Which stall converter?

I have always heard one or the other about Yank, either people love them or hate them. i stick to Vigi because its a qulaity product and I have never heard of issues from them. I bought mines used but they were still friendly and offered great customer service. When I go over to a TH350 one day I'll prolly have a converter locally built.

Re: Which stall converter?

Yank sucks ****! I gave $869 for my Yank 3000 and it studders real hard upon lockup...Feels like the car is coming apart. I have tried to contact them several times about the studder and to get my free stall upgrade (offered several years ago when I purchased it) they have yet to return my E-mails!! As far as gaining any thing from the Yank stall, I gained nothing! I added Mac Headers at the same time and only gained 4 tenths total. Yank promised 4-5 tenths alone. Anyway, don't waste your money on Yank!!

If I were running nitrous I would worry about that and add antiballoon plates, but most of us are not running juice so this is not a likely occurance. Edge has developed a stong following on the Impala board, our extra weight helps put more stress on all drivetrain parts, if that was going to be a problem I believe it would have surfaced by now.

My understanding was ballooning was more hydraulic shock problem within the TC caused by sudden extreme acceleration not by line pressure, but I guess you are more of a tranny guy than me so you certainly should know more, I might just have to go do some reading.

Why? Is their quality control really that flaky? I abuse the daylights out of my Yank St3800. 2 years of mid 1.6 60s in a 3600 lb car and now this year in the high 1.5s at 120mph at 3510lb. Better knock on wood.
