ring and pinion question
ring and pinion question
Just checking to see if the ring and pinion from a late 80s iroc will work in my 95 trans am. My trans am has the 2 series carrier and I recently upgraded to 4:10 richmond gears(big mistake). The iroc is a 342 probably the 3 series carrier gear ,which i have the spacer in my rear end to make that work. I guess what I am asking, are they the same ratio.
Are they the same RATIO??
Or did you mean same RING gear size??
If that's what you meant, then yes, they're both the 7.5" / 7.625" 10-bolt
.
I wouldn't recommend using the spacer behind the ring gear, but hey, that's your call
. I REALLY wouldn't recommend being too hard on it, or things could go bad in a hurry
.
What was wrong with the 4.10's, anyways? And did you know you could have bought them specifically for a 2-series carrier, where the ring gear would be made the extra ~1/4" thick, thus not requiring a spacer?? Now you know
.

Thanks for the info, sorry for my lack of knowledge about the terminology. The 410 was also used but barely, that why I went with it in the 1st place. I had 1st planned on using the car for just a toy but its not gonna work out that way so thats the reason for wanting to get rid of the 410. I had originally thought that I had the 3 series carrier but after disassembling and starting to put it back together I found out real quick that wasn't the case. It has held up really well with the spacer and been to the track several times. So, you really do think they will be interchangeable?
Well the gear that im getting is either a 323 or a 342 which both would be a 3 series carrier if I remember correctly. my rear end that I will be using is for a 2 series carrier but I already have the spacer that I used for the 410 install. SO... if you guys a right then I shouldn't have any problems.
Make sure your 3rd Gen IROC does not have the 9-bolt B-W Australian rear, with the 7.75" ring gear. Those will not be interchangeable. Look at the "sticky" on the Drivetrain topic page to identify the 9-bolt.
