Question for the future, rear ends...

Well, this is early but I want to get this question out of the way.
Which aftermarket rear end are you guys running? Which is best in terms of durability, price, and least parasitic loss?
I'm looking to do a bunch to my car next year which should put it at 400 at the wheels. I do plan on seeing how long my stock rear can last and just having money put away for a new rear since I might need it. But any suggestions, opinions, etc. are welcome. Thanks

Re: Question for the future, rear ends...

After trashing six stock rearends, I helped my friend install a Moser 9inch rearend in his head/cammed/sprayed LS1. It has taken repeated abuse without any problems and I think he paid around 2400.00 for it. I believe that the Ford 9in. rears will suffer a little more parasitic loss as compared to a GM 12-bolt, but they are also supposed to be more durable.

How good are the 9inches on parasitic loss? Did it install easy?

Re: Question for the future, rear ends...

If you do a search you will see a lot of discussion about this. My take is that the 9" is overkill for 99.99% of F-bodies out there and has the disadvantages of weight and parasitic loss. I'd say a 12-bolt. Strange may be the best choice as far as ease of install. I am happy with my Moser/Eaton combo though.

Yes, I think the 9" was also overkill, but I guess his justification was that he had gone through so many rearends already and didn't want to take a chance. The 12-bolt is a better idea and do a search of past posts and you will find alot of brand comparisons between Moser and Strange.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll just go and search the 12 bolts.

Re: Question for the future, rear ends...

I went with the Strange 12 bolt for a few reasons. The TA mount on the Strange is a bolt thru design, similar to stock, whereas the Moser has 4 bolts that thread in from the top and bottom and are prone to backing out even with locktite. Some even tack weld the heads of the bolts to keep them from moving. Also the Strange came fully assembled (Moser you have to press on the axle bearings) with fluid in it and with LT1s, if you order the ABS option, you get really nice custom backing plates already installed. This is truely a bolt in deal. It comes standard with 33 splined axles and an 800lb preload spring Eaton Posi. I opted for the ABS and the LPW cover.

Its been on the car for about 400 miles and is not noisey and works great. So far I highly recommend it.
