Problem setting proper backlash with Motive 4.11

First off, the shims that come with the kit are .010, .012, .016, .020?? Would be helpful if there was a .014

After setting proper carrier bearing preload (so the carrier has to be gently "tapped" in), I cannot get the backlash within spec with the shim combinations possible. I am getting either ~.0076 or ~.0128 and nothing in between. (Motive spec is .008-.012)

So should I back off the preload and reset the backlash, or use the .0128 value?

Here are some pictures with the marking compound at ~.0128.
The pinion depth looks good, at least comparing it to the Motive pattern example. The GM Service manual recommends a centered pattern, though.

That pattern looks slightly in to me, but I would use the 7.6 thou backlash and not worry about it. I dont understand why you cant get what you want with those shims, though.

Thanks for the reply. The problem I have is the preload feels great, but with that preload, I cannot seem to find the right combination of shims to bring it into spec with that preload. Perhaps I will go with the .0076 measurement. I will try that later with the compound to see where I am at.

Pinion depth is too tight, add more shims. If necessary you can buy more shims off summit or jegs. Do it once DO IT RIGHT
