Need help finding the right LSD for my car!
Need help finding the right LSD for my car!
alright guys i'm looking to swap out that old open diff gears for an LSD one with posi lockup but i'm not sure how to tell if its gm's posi-trac LSD (2 wheel burnout) or the one they liked to stick in the S10s that was more of an offroad LS that would give power to the tire with the most traction. i found this auburn one in the jegs catalog (http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...89&prmenbr=361) for $360 which is a doable price but is it the LSD i'm looking for. if not could anyone post up some links to some good relatively priced LSDs (online store or personal) that would work for me? i'm also trying to have this stuff by the 2nd week of feb which is a little rushed but it when i get the chance to do this easily in a shop. here are my rear-end's specs:
10-bolt
7 5/8 (7.625) ring gear(i think)
2-serries carrier
2.73
28 spline axles
also i was looking at this shift kit and was wondering if i should go with that or pay a couple bucks more and go with a B&M or TransGo. heres the link -> http://www.700r4l60e.com/store/custo...&cat=28&page=1 . thankx guys

Re: Need help finding the right LSD for my car!
it has to be able to fit my rear end though, and aren't all 4th gen rears 3-series carriers or only ones with 3.42 and higher? i'm open to all suggestions but i'm also not very good at finding things on the net so links and such would be appreciated. thankx.
Re: Need help finding the right LSD for my car!
okay, thankx for the info. i might just get it straight from the horses mouth and call auburn themselves. and with looking at that shift kit its not the one i want and i'll either go with a transgo or b&m later on.
Re: Need help finding the right LSD for my car!
Well to start with you have a 2-series carrier and very few Limited slips are made for it. Also if you buy a 3-series carrier you are involve with a gear ratio change. But if you have the money anythings possible. However with a RS and a TBI 305 the effort is not worth it,
just my opinion.
just my opinion.
Re: Need help finding the right LSD for my car!
Well if you have a 4th gen.
Then this web page is the cheepest.
http://www.bbandtracing.com/
They have them for $299.
Only thing was when I called them that were on back order for 3 weeks,
My car was down and needed it right away.
As long as you don't change the pinion just keep the carrer shims on the same sides and you will be fine.
And the ring gear has reverse threads on it so it comes off clock wise.
Just change the bearings and the race's.
O yea and clean the tubes out but I would replace the axle seals too.
I ran a rag through mine and it took the spring off the back of the seal
.
and I also used a engine cleaner wand and some mineral spirits.
worked out great
No noise too
Good luck,
Chris.

Re: Need help finding the right LSD for my car!
thankx guys. and don't worry crazyp, i'm gonna be replacing all that stuff wether i like it or not cuz my instructor is requiring it if i want shop credit for installing the posi-unit.
Re: Need help finding the right LSD for my car!
I'd get an Eaton over the Auburn. Eaton's are rebuildable with clutches and steels where the Auburn is a tapered cone that once it starts to burn up will become junk quickly. I broke the factory locker in and old Chevy truck and put in an Auburn and didn't like the way it acted. Didn't feel like true posi when driving. I put an Eaton in the Z after burning up the OEM and love it. I also run 315 drag radials and it's posi whenever I nail the throttle.
Re: Need help finding the right LSD for my car!
i might consider the eaton but its a big price difference over the auburn. i'm not gonna replace anything but the side bearings and gaskets if not needed either. i'm not sure if i'm gonna go with royal purple or regular diff oil either. but thankx guys for helping me out.
