made the swap
made the swap
from 2.73 to 3.42.
and.......
I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!! Wish I had done it years ago. My trans temps are running between 10-30 degrees cooler. The new ranges for each gear take some getting used to, but the car is sooo much quicker off the line.
Oh and to all the huge number of people that have told me go 3.73 over the years......I'm glad i did NOT do that. With my exhaust I would have hated it. With the true duals i've thought about taking the cats off.....now with the new gears the engine is operating at higher rpm...its SOOO much louder. 3.73's would be headache producing at freeway speeds. 3.42 is just right.
If you are thinking about this swap....(from 2.73) DO IT! Easiest way is by avoiding the whole carrier swap issue and just get a used 10 bolt out of an M6 car.

Either way works
... buying "thicker" aftermarket gears isn't really a "short-cut" with a better way?
But swapping the entire diff like you did does save on having to pull the diff apart and setting the gears up ... it's more labor intensive, but less "technical"
.
3.42's really are a nice "everything" ratio. They're that much better than 3.23's, but haven't crossed the line into the "extreme gear" category yet. You get acceleration, cruise-ability, and you can still get some top end from 3rd gear
. What ratio do you think comes with the M6, and why?!
