M21 or M20?

Besides the Z, I also have a 57 Chevy. I'm going to be replacing the transmission with a muncie 4 speed but I'm not sure which set of ratios would be best--close or wide. The car will be street drivien with a 373 or 411 rear. Can anyone give me a suggestion? Thanks.

My dad's '68 SS396 Camaro had an M22 and 3.73's, and he could lift the front tires 1st and 2nd!...clutches didn't live too long tho..

Thanks. With M22's and M21's having the same gear ratios(called close ratio) I guess what your saying then is that in a heavy stock 57 Chevy with 373 or 411 rear gears and a potent small block that close ratio and not wide ratio is the way to go. I thank you for the opinion. I need more info though. Can anyone else offer a suggestion?

The narrower and higher the powerband, the closer the ratios should be. The higher first gear is the problem with close ratio though, but using a lower rear end gear will help. So, probably close ratio with the 4.11's. But some more info will help. How big a cam do you plan to run and what size are your intake ports?

I think I may be able to help you here!! I have one of each!! I have a 69 Camaro with a m20 and a 3:73 rearend. My dad has a 69 Camaro with an M21 with a 4:10 rearend. Dads car has a crate ZZ1 engine and my car has a crate ZZ4. Almost identical setups. Even though we have never "officially" raced, we have had our fun on the street. In all honesty, between the 2 ratios, you cant feel much difference. Although, his car does feel stronger taking off. Going down the freeway doing 60, dad is running at 3000rpm and I am running at 2600. Hope this helps you some!!
