Does this DS depth look ok?

This is a Dennys Nitrous ready that was in a car with TH400 and a 12 bolt.
I have the TH400 and the DS but its installed to a 10 bolt.
Does it look like I will have problems? There is a good amount of output shaft in there, and if it were really off I would just get another shaft but this one will fit perfect when I do the 12 bolt next year.

Is that a pic with weight on the wheels or the rear hanging in the wind?

Re: Does this DS depth look ok?

I had jackstands under the rear in that pic.

Looks like I may have to get a longer DS.

Dammit.

were jackstands under the frame or under the axle? I did a th350 conversion and was wondering the same thing when I did my install but the length turned out great. That looks like it is only out by about 1/2 an inch. you you have any idea how much is inside the tailshaft?

The jackstands were under the axle.
I have driven it around town a bit and a little jaunt on the hiway down to the next exit and it seems fine.
I will pull it back out and see exactly how much output shaft I have sticking out. I believe its about 3/4 of an inch.
Can you have a driveshaft lengthened? Should I just get a new one and sell this one?
Thanks

Is that out of an LS1 or LT1? If its out of an LS1 the LT1 Yoke is longer so you might just be able to switch those out and be good.

It came out of an LT1 car. 97 to be exact.
I dunno, better safe than sorry I guess. I will look into one about 3/4 of an inch longer.

Re: Does this DS depth look ok?

I heavy duty DS will typically have 1/4" - 1/2" more clearance than the stock DS. With the rear axle still on the stands, unbolt the u-bolts from the rear U-joint, and slide the DS forward into the tailshaft housing until it stops. That distance should be in the range of 3/4" - 1".

What length do you need? I have the DS out of my TH400/Strange 12-bolt combo for sale. I had to get a shorter DS when I added the Gear Vendor. Its a Mark Williams 3" chrome moly with forged input yoke and solid 1350 U-joints, no more than 12 passes. Cost $625, sell for $425 + shipping. Let me know the length you need, and I'll check it.

Re: Does this DS depth look ok?

Thanks Fred

I have been working on the car so much I need a break.
The shaft I have now came out of a TH400/12 bolt setup on an LT1 so your Mark Williams shaft may be the same length or real close to it.

I will try to get the car back up on jackstands AGAIN and measure it.
The deal is I was going to go 12 bolt in a year or so with next years tax return and this DS will work great with that setup.
I don,t want to break stuff cause it was too short though either.
Maybe some adjustable LCAs and moving the rear forward a bit is the short term solution.
With a stock internal LT1 with 160k I don,t think I have enough horsepower to break it.
