A4 trans gave up the ghost.

Well it started Friday I was on the highway and I had to pass some slow moving traffic and the trans down shifted from OD and I passed the slower cars but noticed the engine revving as I mashed the gas but the car wasn't picking up any more speed. I manually shifted out of overdrive then back into it but i could feel the trans slipping and I could smell burnt trans fluid.
I got the car home and opened the hood and there was trans fluid on the underside of the hood above the trans dipstick, when I pushed the dipstick back in it popped back out slightly. So i checked the fluid and it was about 1/2 a qt low so I topped it off and test drove the car. Everything seemed ok at first but on my way to work this morning it started slipping again then clunking hard going into second gear as if i had been rear ended.
Needless to say the trans is being rebuilt and I'm adding a 2800 stall converter, deep pan and the biggest B&M trans cooler also the Z pak 3-4 clutches and probably a trans go shift kit. Did any of these cars come with a locking dipstick to keep it from popping out and causing fluid loss? Also any other suggestions of other mods I should make would be appreciated.

The 1LE performance package came with the locking auto dipstick. GM part number is 12560230. But I'm guessing the reason you lost fluid is the tranny boiled the crap out of your fluid and it expanded until it shot out your dipstick tube.

I don't know much about autos all my other cars are or have been manual tranny but I don't see how the tranny fluid could have reached the boiling point, when I picked it up from the shop last Friday after having the suspension and brakes completely replaced, I only drove about 6 - 7 miles from the shop to my house. The car has a factory trans cooler built into the radiator but I guess anything is possible, anyway thanks for the locking dipstick pn, I'll check GMpartsdirect and see if I can get one.

It will get hot VERY quickly if there is major slippage in the tranny.

dude, you probly had something clogging your transmission vent tube on top of the tranny, thats most likely what caused the dippstick to pop out.

Well that's no problem I'm going to get it rebuilt to pro race specs by CPT and I'm getting the locking dipstick, then it should be all good.
