help choosing tire brand/size for track!!!
well, I am a newb at this, so sorry if I seem retarded. Here is my car:
422rwhp
slp triangulated weld in sub frame connectors
lakewood traction action bars
spohn chassis mounted torque arm
stock 10 bolt with T/A cover and cap studs
6 speed manual
stock clutch/ turned flywheel
I have Z06 18x10.5 out back with daily driver tires.
I have stock 16's I could use for the track, or could find some cheap 17's like zr1's or something for track only.
Now, I dont want to grenade the rear, so which brand tire is best?? Some street slicks, not full slicks. I want to run street leagal at grove creek, brainerd ext.
Then, what tire siz is best? Do I want taller tires with stock 3.42 gears? I know I want as wide as pissible, but help me out here! I want to get some good times, without blowing up my rear. I can't afford a 12 bold yet, but I want to get some times to see how fast she is.
So, suggestions on rim sizes, tire sizes, and brands. I want to do this cheap too, nothing outrageous. I will also post in suspension forum, as maybe that is the place for this too...
Thanks, and ask any questions and I will post up as soon as I get it!

Re: help choosing tire brand/size for track!!!
FWIW, I had traction issues on my normal street tires (kumho 712's) but the clutch (LT4 setup) would hold up since the tires were spinning. The first time that I got on it in 1st with BFG DR's on the street, the clutch was slipping bad enough to smell it.
So at a minimum, get a decent clutch in the car since your power level (very similar to my last setup) will destroy the stock clutch if the tires don't spin.
For track only tires, get some of the MT ET Drag radials. They are the best street slick out there imo. They have a size that fits on the stock 16" rims that many people have had great luck with. They are the 255/50-16 tires.

Re: help choosing tire brand/size for track!!!
I HAD stupid cumho's on my car last time at the track. What a joke those were. Anyway, now I am lookin for just some tires for track only. Something I can throw in the back seat and head to the track, and swap out there.
What is a decent clutch? I know the mcleods are the top dog, but what else is good without issues for DAILY DRIVING?
Also, I was lookin at nittos, because some say they are the stickiest you can get without fear of blowing up the stock rear.
My goal is to have fun at the track, not trailer the thing home.
Thanks again for being quick to help me out with some advice man!

Re: help choosing tire brand/size for track!!!
The Lakewood bars suck. Get rid of them. If you use sticky tires with an M6 and a stock rear on a prepped track, and you launch hard, it WILL break. Not IF but WHEN is the question.

The numbers your laying down coupled with a manual tranny going along with a factory 10 bolt (which I went through 4 with only 350-360hp at the flywheel) you WILL break that rear end, and as stated not if, but when.BUT if you can get by without worrying about "bling" and you want a cheap set-up that serves the purpose, forget you've heard about drag radials, forget about any rims larger than 15". Look for some 15" rims 8"-10" wide with the right offset-steel or aluminum will be fine. Look for some used tires-can usually be had for under $75/set and it will give you enough traction to implode your diff without setting your wallet back too much.
I've run the Hoosier QTP DOT slicks on my car since I got it, great tire wear, excellent traction just remember at least 20psi for street driving to keep it safe. Many of our local die hard M/T fans finally gave these Hoosiers a try and wondered what the heck took them soo long to try them since 60' were typically better and all the numbers were more consistant on a days pass to pass ratio...did I mention longer tire life???
Another thing yoou need to remember-wider is not better. You put more tire onto the track with a taller tire with everything else being even due to roll out. A taller tire will take away some ET but you will not fight traction issues. Given your set up a minimum of a 28" tall tire is the shortest I'd go, you have plenty of gear reduction in the gear box to over come the mid range diff gearing and tall tire.
Have fun and hopefully if/when those Lakewoods break you can keep it off the wall and not hit your opponent in the other lane...why those things are still sold I have no idea???
Re: help choosing tire brand/size for track!!!
I agree to ditch the Lakewoods...I went with Spohn rod end/rod end LCAs and used the 255 50 R16s on my 16x8 stockers for 1.55 60's...but I'm an A4...You will break the rear, so unless you are willing to get a 12bolt/9"/S60, then I wouldn't look into DRs yet...But when you do, get M/T DRs....
