Re: reseting the ECU codes

The scan tool should be able to do it. If it doesn't, and disconnecting the battery doesn't, and pulling the PCM fuse doesn't, there is a problem somewhere else.

Re: reseting the ECU codes

For my '87 Camaro, disconnecting the negative battery lead for 3 minutes resets the error codes.

But before you erase the code, why not find out what the error code # is?
I think you can do this by opening up a paper clip into a U-shape and inserting it between the A and B ports of the diagnostic ALDL port. Turn the key to on, but do not start the engine. Count the flashes of the SES light.

You should get a 1-2, 1-2, 1-2 this means the ECU is OK, then you will get the error codes. All codes are two digits numbers. So, two flashes a short pause and three flashes is a 23. Each error code is given three times. Once all codes are flashed, the SES light will go back to flashing the 1-2, 1-2, 1-2...
Now you are done getting codes. Write these down. Turn the key off and remove the paper clip. Then erase the codes.

Go to a good parts store and find out what to codes mean. Or try here.

This is how its done on my '87,,, Does anyone know if the above works on '94s???

Re: reseting the ECU codes

thanx for the advice, actually I know what the code is already, its my EGR valve, I recently replaced it but the damn light keeps on turning on. and considering that its been well over 5 months and I can no longer return it. I will just have to rough it out untill I'm ready to cough up another 200 bucks for an electronic EGR valve for my 3.4L 94 camaro.

p.s
when I had the codes cleared last time ( my friend used a scanner to erase it) it took several weeks before the light lit up again

The codes will be erased if you remove the power source from the computer.. like disconnecting the battery. Make sure to leave it off for at least a minute though or it wont work. I have never found a scanner that will reset codes... I have always unpluged the PCM fuse.

Re: reseting the ECU codes

You have a continuing problem if the light keeps coming on. Have the code pulled again, and no you can't use the paper clip trick after '93, to see if it is the same or different. All scan tools and code pullers should have the capability of resetting trouble codes. If the tools don't have this capability, then they are not worth buying.
