Which code reader?
Is there something I'm doing wrong in trying to get the codes from my 94 z? I think the 94 is still an OBD I because it has the 12 pin plug, but when I plug in the reader I get nothing, not even a 12. What am I doing wrong?

Your "code reader" is probably just a device that shorts the ALDL pins and causes the codes to flash on the SES light. That doesn't work on 94 and 95 LT1's, even if they are OBD-I. Only the 93 works that way.
To read the codes on a 94 or 95, you need one of the following:
HARDWARE:
-ScanMaster LT1 ($250)
-Auto Xray ($170)
-Actron scanner (not the $30 short the pins model)
-GM Tech 1 or 2 ($1-3,000)
-SnapOn scanner (over $1,000)
SOFTWARE:
-FreeScan (free download)
-TTS DataMaster (free download, limited to 15-20 uses)
-Diacom ($300-450... definitely not worth it)
-pcmcomm (comes bundled with LT1_Edit)
A cable to connect your ALDL connector to a laptop, from AKM cables ($50-100).
