code 83 TCC PWM Solenoid Circuit Fault on my 1994

Anybody have any idea what this is telling me? My car is a 1994 Z28 automatic. It has a performabuilt tranny in it. It's not the original PCM because the original one went bad. I have no idea what this even means so I could really use some help on this one.

Take a look here, ref shoebox http://shbox.com/1/1995_pcm7.jpg When the TCC solenoid (Torque Converter Clutch) is not activated you should have about +12V ignition on PCM pin D6 (transmission plug pin 'U' ) when activated the PCM grounds pin D6 to pick the solenoid. If the voltage on D6 does not match what the PCM is commanding you get the circuit failure DTC. Could be broken/shorted wire, connection, damaged connector pin, etc or open coil in solenoid. You need to track it down with a test lite or a meter..Is the problem new or did it start with the tranny change.

It sounds like you have a 95 bin file in your 94. The 94 does not use the PWM valve, hence the reason you are seeing a code. You will have to have the PWM switched off in the tune. It just gives you an excuse to get a mail order tune...

I bought this car with no engine so I'm not sure how it was before. I did get a used pcm also because the original one had a burned ground terminal. Now the car is a 1994 and I have been told that in 94 they didn't have the PWM solenoid. That started in 1995 from my understanding. Now I was thinking the new used PCM I bought was from a 1995 so is it possible that I'm getting this code because my 94 tranny doesn't have this PWM type solenoid? Now just for testing I took the original PCM with the burnt terminal and plugged it in and started it and with it I didn't get that code..

I am starting to think you have hit the nail on the head. I think it does have the 95 tune in it. Now will this throwing the code affect how the tranny works?

I don't know the answer to that question. Maybe some of the tranny guys will chime in.

Try a search in the drivetrain section. I do remember this being discussed there. It can't hurt and you might get your answer sooner.

Would you like me to move this to "Drivetrain"?

Just get someone to turn off the error code. When I swapped computers in my car I had the exact same thing. I just turned the code off because the car shifted fine. I drove and raced all last year with no issues.

Did the converter still lock as normal even with the code?

Yup had no issues, I logged the car and made sure it locked up.

strange, I tried mine and it wouldn't lock so I ran a wire from the tan wire that goes to the lockup and touched a ground just to test to make sure the tranny was working. It was fine. I have another pcm that came in the car but it has a burnt ground terminal but I was able to take it apart and run an external ground. Now the converter locks like it should. I would just use this pcm but it is tuned for a big can and a blower so I'm sure it's not right for what I have

Jay, did you verify it locked up before or after the error code was tuned out. The '95 PCM software is posting the DTC 83 because mv has an unterminated wire to the TCC PWM solenoid it thinks is there, but is not installed in a '94. I'm thinking it may be turning off the normal TCC solenoid pick due to confusion, as a safety. Hard to figure out how the PCM will react to some DTC's. mv if you knew the resistance of a TCC PWM solenoid you could wire a resistor between the PICK and +12v ign and dummy up the circuit to kill the DTC. Probably easier to tune it out..
