BUILD UP what to do on a budget
BUILD UP what to do on a budget
i currently have a 327 bored .040 over, forged internals, intake, cast iron heads, etc
goal is 450 hp 550+with spray (at crank not RWHP)
sell and go big?
screw the spay and get blown?
stroker!???
want to stay SB if change motor so i can reuse some of old parts.
any ideas

Yup
Yup, there is 'no replacement for the d's. But, I still like the idea of a 302 Chevy, tho. Guess because I got to see a couple of them when I was younger, & they were eating the lunches of built 396bb's!
I would keep the 327 as-is, & get a 350/383, if you want the cubes. That way, if you ever get tired of hot-rodding (or get married & have kids), you can always sell the 327 as almost-stock, or build a car for your kid, & use it as an 'old-school' thumper! OR:http://www.themotorbookstore.com/che...ne-manual.html is a $16 book that shows you how to get 550+ horses from a naturally-aspirated 327, &/or how to build a forced-induction one!
There are alot of forced-induction systems, nowadays, & they really do rock! I have a '94 lt-1 w/a Powerdyne SC that eats new Cobras! Matter-of-fact, I think that I will blow the 302 that I'm planning for my '71 RS! Let's see, stock 302 Chevy (according to Hot Rod magazine- re '73ish- is about 375 horse, plus a small 4-9lbs boost = Alot of fun!) See:
http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/3...une/index.html
So, if you want to build your 327, or stroke it (up or down), or start over with another block/crank combo, your choices are practically endless! The old adage IS true, cubes=power! BUT, induction=cubes is ALSO true (rhetorically speaking, because the overall increase in fuel/air volume in the same-sized cylinder is equivalent to a larger cylinder that is normally aspirated). That's why my cousin's Subaru WRX w/ turbo 4-cylinder can run a 13 second quarter!
IMHO you have the best motor (Chevy small-block) ever made. What you do w/it is entirely up to you!
Peace!

I like the stroker motor idea. Its probably the cheapest way, less then $1k, to make 400-450hp. Problem with some of the stroker kits is they end up with too much compression for today's fuel. (My idea of too much compression for a street car is anything over 10:1). Another good idea is a baby blower. Holley (?) sells a 144 blower for less then $2500. Just right for a street small block on pump gas. I've also seen a blow-thru-the-carb blower on a sbc 1st gen camaro that I liked. I cant remember the name off-hand though. Pricey, at over $2500.
I have a 327 in my 67 camaro .030 over, people always ask if it's a 383 or 400. The most important part of the motor is heads. Don't skimp out on the heads. The 327 is a good motor because it has the same bore as a 350 just a shorter stroke. Good for torque. Find yourself a good set of heads get a matching cam for the heads and the spray and you will have a really awesome motor.
could i get a 383 stroker kit for my motor. If the bore is the same as a 350 then wouldn't a 383 stroker kit for a 350 block work on a 327 block as well?
now looking at a the ZZ4 383 425/460 motor
has a cam in it from previous owner but is unknown specs to me.
would new cam, heads, etc make enough power? motor needs to be tuned better but at max is at 280-300 now....

You can but just like a 350 you'll still have to clearance the block. A 400 crank won't fit, the mains are bigger. Put that 500hp kit on there and she should fly!!! Then spray your way to 600hp. That 67 camaro only weighs like 3k. Mine weighs 2800lbs. Good luck.
alright thanks for all the help in advance!
how much would it be to clearance a block?
1K for rotating assembly and 2k for the top end kit. another 1K for a good carb, fuel pressure reg, dist. etc...
4K 500hp at crank motor sounds real good!
then again i can just get a new motor for about the same price.....
hummmmm

If you have a large journal 327, the 350 crank will drop in without any clearance issues. Everybody makes 3.75" stroke 400 cranks with 350 size journals. If your 327 is large journal, it is the same as a 350.
Yeah!
Yeah! He's right about the large journal 327 being just like a 350, but if it's a small-journal block (pre-66 I think?) then the only cranks that will fit it are the 327 &/or the 283 (which BTW IS a 302, if you add a set of TRW forged pistons!)

I personally think your best bet is to buy a stroker small block of the cubic inches you want and then buy KIT 1 in your list and rock out. Save up a little more money and put a plate kit on it and squeeze away.
I pain less then 4 grand for my BBC LONG BLOCK shipped to my house,I stuck a weak bumpstick in it,intake manifold and carb and rocked out to 11.1@120 all motor.
Hope this helps bud

i tired checking the cast numbers on the black and came up with nothing.
have no idea what year motor it is
i have a 4-5k budget max.
going to look at assembled 383.
just got an offer for the 327 without parts i will swap over. 1500....would pay for new assembled 383

That block isn't the original for your car is it? If so I would seriously reconsider selling it. You may very well kick yourself a few years down the road for selling parts off of a numbers matching car. If not then have at it though
Give me the casting number and I can tell you what it is.
