I really think you should talk to a head porter. It may be more like 50hp, or more, after you get a really good port job and custom cam.

A 383 will make more power, plain and simple. I would just think, given your budget, it would be better for you to go ahead and get a killer top end to enjoy now. You can always build a bigger, better bottom end and swap it in later on.

Just my $.02 though, take it for what it's worth, i've never built a 327

i have no idea where or how to get in touch with a good head porter.

how much would it coast?
how much turn around time can i expect?
what would be a good cam for that set up?

Try http://www.eportworks.com/

There are several good head porters on this board, most of whom could select a good cam for your needs.

As for cost or turn around time, I have no idea.

Do what you want to, man, BUT if I were you, I'd seriously consider getting the exact parts that Rod & Custom already tested the combos on. I have spent alot of money & time on engines, & it's been my experience that you need to build with balance- not just the reciprocating-assembly, but with balanced parts/ combos.
Also, some combinations work well, & others don't, so when you have a proven one, it's not a bad idea to stay with it until a better one is proven. Like I say, it's entirely up to you, but I'd at least check on the total price of building the motor like they did, before I'd even consider changing anything... You did say that you only had $4000 to spend, right?
Peace!

i thought that the heads i posted was a better idea. they where just a little more agrresive and expensive. if they got 426hp, then i should get near the 430-435 mark

You're probably right, but what if the motor doesn't support the extra flow? See, all the parts have to be matched to your other parts, or they won't work optimally. Better isn't always bigger! A higher-lift cam, for instance, gives you less low-end vacuum & torque, & may require better valve-springs & a bigger stall-converter, & a distributor-advance, etc. to work with your motor...
Again, try calling the people who did the testing, because it gets 'way too technical for my little mind to calculate! I'll bet that they could tell you, tho!
That way, you won't waste your money by making a mistake, then have to sell what you have (for a loss) & spend the money again, to get the right parts.
Trust me, I've been there! I know a guy who had a low 12's 350 Monza, then he spent $3000 dollars on new parts & only gained .2 seconds for his expense! He worked at a Super Shop performance store, too. So, his $3000 was more like our $5000! BUT HE DIDN'T BALANCE/ MATCH HIS PARTS!
Hey, it's your money, I'm just trying to save you some potential probs!

I am no pro at building engines (DUH thats why i am on here)
what are some good books or reference material?

the cylinder walls seem damn near perfect. should i still bore it? it already is .040 over.

Ask MachinistOne what he thinks about Eagle products. Some people love them, some hate them.

I thought you wanted to go forged?

the pistons are forged. I want to try and lower cost. The nitrous wont be used all that much and if i decide to go forced induction then i will keep the boost rather low.

Just a thought..sell the 327 and find a 400 block and start from there...
i've built 2 of these things and christ with a good hyd roller cam they put some crap to the pavement..your talking buying a pretty expensive bottom end anyway, so the extra spent for the cubes might be worth it...
just a thought..

He wants to spend $2000 or less on a shortblock....that's not really expensive.

Can't beat the logic though....more cubes=more power

When you start takling about getting into the 400 block, the cost takes a nice jump up. I was in this situation a couple months ago, rebuild my 327 or go bigger. I ended up buy a new crate 383 so I wouldnt be disapointed. My budget was a little higher then 4K and for everything I dropped about 5400 for my engine. I didnt go cheap on anything though because I wanted it to last as well as put a big grin on my face everytime I hit the gas.

I know cost can ruin a persons dream but do your best to do it right the first time. Just be prepaired if you go the 383 route to get everything balenced and know that there will be less of your old parts you can reuse.
