BBC Fuel Pump Installation ?

This should be an easy one, but I can't install this pump because the rod that actuates the fuel pump won't stay up long enough for me to get the lever in place.

Any tips? I've tried adding grease to it in hopes of slowing it from sliding down so I can get the pump in place, but no go.

TIA guys!

I've always been able to hold it in place with a finger or small screwdriver. If that failed I'd remove the plug below the pump that lets the pump pushrod come out, and stick a screwdriver or similar up there through the hole to hold it in place.

On the front of the block in line with the fuel pump rod is a small bolt, 1/2 or 9/16 hexhead. If you install a long bolt in this hole it will make contact with the fuel pump rod and hold it in place. After you have installed the fuel pump reinstall the original bolt with sealer as this penetrates the oil passage for the pump rod.
Do not over tighten the long bolt or you can score/damage the pump rod.

He's got a big block. That works on small blocks, but not big blocks.
