Stock speaker replacement suggestions
Stock speaker replacement suggestions
I have a 1997 camaro SS with the monsoon 6 speaker setup. Looks like the fronts and backseat speakers are 6.5s? and the rears are a single 4 inch per side? Any suggestions on what would be a decent upgrade while keeping the stock head unit? Any help would be appreciated as ive been out of stereos since the late 80s early 90s, lol and I know weve come a long ways since than, lol. Thanks in advance. Eric L
My car has four 6.5" speakers. I replaced them with Polk Audio DB650's. they were like $20 each new from ebay.
The biggest quality gains though were from using a 350w true rms kicker 4 channel amp. Most head units are 50watts peak x 4 channels (or 17watts rms). My speakers will take like 60watts rms I think, Anyway now I'm not underpowering them when I turn it up, so no more distortion.
You can underpower the nicest speakers in the world and they sound just as crappy as anything else.

Thanks for the input. I was trying to keep the factory headunit, is there a good way to hook the amp up to the factory headunit. The monsoon is SUPPOSE to have a 250 watt amp in it already. But I dont know if that is the headunit or a seperate amp, I havent torn into it to see. Thanks Eric L
i put powerbass 6.5 in the front and for the mids and then i cut the back so that a set of 6.5 pioneers would go in and the stock speeker cover still fits. the sound i got was really good i had a good amount of bass with the powerbass and the pionners were great as the highs so it all evened out. this was with the stock deck and amp with no sub's
MOnsoon is a separate amp in the rear of the car. THe only problem is that it runs at 1 ohm and if you put regular aftermarket speakers in, they will run at 1/4 power and the amp will overheat if you turn it up tol high all the time. Go aftermarket deck and run wires to each speaker or run a new amp also.
