Security system gurus.. need some advice

Well, I recently bought an 01 formula, and thought it didn't have keyless entry (due to the RPO codes). I was looking into getting a security system w/ keyless and conveniently the car took light to show me the next day that it already has one installed. Apparently the battery had a loose connection, and once I re-connected it the alarm was set and it started going mad when I opened the door. The problem is, Im the 4th owner, and bought the car at an auction. The brain for the alarm doesnt have a name on it (or at least not on the side that was showing, should I pull all surrounding panels and see if the box has a name on it on the other sides? the only thing showing is the wiring information on a white "sticker"). With the brand/name I'm sure getting a new remote is easy, but is there a way to get a "universal" type of remote and program it to the car without knowing if the box does really have no name anywhere? I hate to ditch it because it looks like a really nice setup. Two kill switches(or one kill and one override switch), trunk pop, keyless, and if I was reading correctly remote start, and a two way transmitter perhaps. (the only thing I really want working is the keyless, trunk pop, and alarm)

I dropped by a local car shop that does security installs, and of course since they couldnt easily find a name, but could tell it wasn't a brand they install they wanted to rip it all out and put in one of their systems (which btw they gave me a good price that I may still consider because I really like the new viper systems!!)

CLiffs : Car has unknown aftermarket security system. Any way I can get a new remote programmed or am I SOL without buying a new system?

34 views and no one.. wow O_O. Guess it's remove and install a new one, or do without.

As for that would it be possible to just wire in a new brain, or would everything need to be completely re-wired?

Unless you can find out the exact brand/model, and a user manual, or a shop that has worked with that brand/model I would say bit the bullet and get the new viper alarm.

Most good shops will just start from scratch, since thet can't validate the quality of work they didn't do.
You could use a lot of the current wiring as a possible reference if your going to install a new one yourself, but otherwise I wouldn't.

+1. Viper makes good stuff.

But I would recommend doing it yourself, if you feel up to it. It's not that hard, especially since all the wiring is already there, and Viper's instructions are fairly easy to understand.

The make/model of the alarm is on the underside of most modules. I assume its zip tied to the steering column. Just cut the zip ties and look at the underside. There are only a few brands most companies use (viper, clifford, directed) and they are all made by the same company so thats probably what you have. The remotes are really easy to get and reprogram.
