Ever since the 350 TPI our cars have been getting faster and progressing back to real muscle, they basically started it off again. 5.7 Liters, 225HP, 330TQ, 6 sec 0-60's, and low 14's in 87 was definetly something to talk about. This was probably the 1st actually good fuel injected GM engine with some power, gas mileage was rated at 16/26 MPG too. They are still great contenders today and you can't beat an SBC. Unless you have a BBC that is.
L98

What did they readline at 4800 RPM? they were pretty gas hungry too..

The only reason they were put in the F-body was because the 305 couldn't run with the 5.0L. Even with the L98 having more torque and HP the third gen was still slower than the 5.0L.

The 5.0L got better gas milage, was lighter, and easier to mod. SO in respect to the competition, the L98 failed to compete.

Don't forget, those things only came with automatics only!

Besides, I've never seen a magazine called 'L98', but I've seen (and had) alot of magazines called '5.0'. And they didn't have any GM engines in them.

I didn't respond to the L98 post because, well, everything the 3rd Gen did was the best and still is the best to this day. No sense in arguing that with IZ28 anymore...

The L98 was a decent motor for its time but it was nothing groundbreaking. I don't even view the LT1 as being a groundbreaking motor because much of it was based on the original SBC from the 50's. When the LS1 debuted with its massive power increase, unbelievable gas milage, low emmission rating and all-aluminum construction (with composite plastic intake), that's when the future of high performance pushrod motors became verrrry interesting again.

Next thing you know Z284EVER or Z28Yesterday or whatever his name is will tell me how I should be embarassed to drive a 4th gen.....yet odly my V6 could put a hurting on his RS

Sorry should drag him into it...but the 3rd gen arguments are just so funny....

I seriously doubt that an engine that wasn't really near the best in it's class when it came out should be one of the best engines of the last 15 years.

Soure maybe it was a big increase over the carbed small block...but looking back on it, it's only notable for being "almost as fast as a Mustang"

Since you've dragged me in, I have two things to say:

1) I've never owned an RS.

2) You have spelled "oddly" wrong.

Thank You.

You guys listen to too many M*stang owners and how their "stock" 5.0's (with slicks, exhaust, filters, gears, timing, and pulleys) ran 13's or 12's all stock LOL. I've seen real stock L98 vs. 5.0 races and know dudes that have owned L98's brand new and they never felt that they had to look out for stock 5.0's, after beating them of course. The ONLY 5.0 that was a real competitor for an L98 G92 A4 was the 5.0 LX M5, and then its like a drivers race. But I guess M*stang dudes that even admit it are wrong though too. You guys will do anything to make your engines look like the greatest thing ever. Oh I didn't list the LS1, which is the fastest engine ever. Lets make it known, the 4th Gen Camaro is the fastest car ever made, nothing can beat them and they should talk a bunch of BS about everything else.

You know something, I seriously know why Third Gen and other Gen dudes usually try to stay away from this site or discussions about any other Gen here. Its all because of 4th Gen owners that think they are the **** just because they have newer cars that are faster. Did ****** attitudes also come with the cars when you bought them because I really think so. Oh only the LS1 is great. Of course!! It has to be the ONLY engine any1 should list, I should have known. Should I find a mint lower mile IROC-Z 350 TPI soon, a few months after, I will put it up against any LS1 I can find and I won't need a few months time for LT1's. I'll be faster for cheaper and sound better while doing it. Then we'll autocross, but I should have no need to mod the suspension for that. Then we'll do the looks contest, then we'll do the int. room contest, then we'll do the cool factor contest, and I know which car will win everytime. You guys do not own some kinda incredible thing that no1 has ever seen, you drive the most unpopular Gen ever that got put on hiatus excuses or not, I don't care how fast they are. All I ever hear is how people think they look terrible, even from some of the owners which bought them just for the engine and speed. That stuff isn't everything, they could have run 11's from the factory, but they'd still look like Chryslers and cars that came from space which didn't sell. The numbers and lack of interest was/is just pathetic, the cars are still on the lots LOL. I'm tired of dealing with ignorant 4th Gen owners and people that don't know anything but think they do like f79. BTW, I really really doubt you'd beat Z284's Third Gen 305 TPI IROC-Z, or outhandle it.

Well, this thread seems to have taken an interesting turn. Here is my 2 cents.

5.0 Mustangs were really fast. I've spent time driving all of them. A 5.0 LX sedan, M5, 3.08 gear...was way faster than a 5.0 GT convertible with auto and 2.73 gears.

By the same token, different TPI Camaros had varying degrees of performance.

When I was younger and stupider, my G92, M5, LB9, N10 dual cat, 3.45 gear IROC......NEVER lost to a 5.0 Mustang.

No way!! Thats not possible!! And a 305 at that. And if the L98 was faster.......

I don't care how much the know-it-all 4th Gen BSers (I don't mean every 4th Gen owner of course) here wanna deny, the IROC-Z's and Z28's with the 350 TPI, (305 M5 G92's deserve some credit too) and M*stang 5.0's brought back muscle to the cars. LT1's and LS1's kept it progressing but also had no real close/fun competition like the L98's did. If you guys don't know that the performance comeback started in the later 80's and with those cars and engines then there is nothing to discuss anyway.

While we're on the subject of 305's....what about the L-69.

When 5.0 Mustangs were literally eating F-bodies in '82 and '83, the closet hotrodders at GM, slid an L-83 cam, free flow exhaust and dual snorkel H.O. air cleaner on a 305 (5 speed and 3.73 gears didn't hurt either)....and voila....instant street parity.
