What should the top F-5 be called
GM (especially Chevy) is in an SS craze right now, so I doubt it would matter what we said about this (you know things are bad when even our resident Camaro guy from GM seems eager to forget Z28 for SS).
In all unpleasant honesty, a top Camaro with an SS badge will sell just as well as a top Camaro with a Z28 badge. We'll grumble a bit, but we'll still line up with cash in hand (plus inevitable dealer markup) to but the next one because we feel it's a great car. I'm sure someone at GM has done some type of study & found this out or they wouldn't do it.
But I think everyone at GM who is contemplating this remember that you killed the Z28 name twice, and it came back twice! In 1975 the name disappeared because the whole Camaro line was destine to become extinct, and the name was submerged under the IROC Camaro banner in the late 80s and someone brought it back. Camaro may be a part of the Chevrolet lineup, but like the Corvette it's a unique car.
We may end up buying it now (or a few years) but do you really want to be remembered in the future with the same group that:
*Stuck the "Z" prefix on as many "sporty cars" as they could in the 80s and early 90s?
*Decided to change the name from Trans Am to "T/A" when the 3rd gen Firebirds came out?
*Decided Celebrity was actually a good name for a car?
*Decided to use IROC without any reference to Z28 whatsoever?
Even if Z28 becomes a 80s Mustang LX 5.0 type of car (which would still link it to it's track legacy), it would be a mistake to drop it completely.
SS could still be the trim package it is now, but Z28 should have the same equptment and should stay in the lineup.

While I disagree with like your entire post Guion, (and I refuse to argue some of those things you mentioned again) maybe there needs to be a replacement or 2 in the GM Camaro department?!
Maybe get some people back that knew what they were doing with the car. Maybe they like the Camaro, but that doesn't mean they absolutley know what to do with it or are the right people to have in control of it.

No. The people with SS's really could care less what it's called. They just want Cobra killing performance. It's the Z28 guys who make a big deal over a SLP option.

didnt bother reading through all the mumbo jumbo..but here it is..
Tkae out 1-LE...
replace the RPO with
Z28
thats what it should be..
you can get your hoity toity SS...but when you want the real bang for the buck..streey beast..you go for the Z28 moniker..best of both worlds..GM gets there top model SS..and the less known RPO coded Z28 for racers comes back..
so it goes:
base
RS
SS
or
Z28
sounds about right???

ZL1 should be above both SS and Z28 but only in a limited # and with performance that blows the Z28 and SS out of the water.
posible engines
525HP 8.1L big block HP3
500HP 6.4L LS7
500HP S/C 6.0L V8

Why would they have all 3 models in the first year? I think they will have a base model and SS as the top model. Then 3 or so years later bring back Z28 to keep sales up. Its obvious that GM is pushing the SS brands as said by GuionM. I'll just be happy to see a new camaro though
