So while the Mach1 and Cobra are closer in performance to the GTO, FORD IS STILL GIVING THE ENTHUSIAST ON A SUB $30,000 BUDGET A REAL RWD PERORMANCE CAR.
GM (esp. Pontiac) is just letting Ford run all over them. I really hope they have a good plan.

GTO = $35K
CTS-V = $50K+
Silverado SS = $45K+ (actually AWD)
SSR = $45 - 50K

Lets break this down a little more, ok?
The GTO is a stop gap car with only 18K being sold in the US this year. That makes it very exclusive. The nearest Poncho dealer to me only recieved an allotment for 1 and it was sold WAY before the car actually arrived in the showroom, BTW still hasn't been picked up yet it is just sitting there.
CTS-V the UBER sports sedan. This car outperforms the M5 for like 10K less. And it has a newness that makes all CTS cars sell better. It also has lateral G-meters and other nifty V series only features on board for $52K. So I think it fits into the price range very well. BTW I have seen 4 on the streets around here and they are BAADD.
Silvy SS is not what enthusiest were after but it still sells and it sells at closer to $30K than $40K. Remeber Silverado's have rebates right now, it is getting a remodel in like 2 years so don't cry about it looking stale. For what it has the Silvy SS is a VERY nice truck. It basically carries the Escalades drivetrain and puts it into a extended cab truck with a great appearance package, including special wheels that many people pay to put on thier regular Silverado.
SSR will sell every one they make this year, all 15K of them, at $40K+ because they are the only things like them on the road. It has Presence and uniquiness that no other truck on the road can match. Like it or not the SSR is a success, and will earn money.
The low buck RWD performance cars are coming. Solstice a Z4 competitor for $20K is a steal. Another Pontiac kappa as a coupe could come along. A Saturn Kappa and, though still a few years out, a Nomad could happen as well. I will bet money the Saturn WILL happen. Also the 07-08 Chevy Zeta coupe should make everyone here drool all over themselves for under $30K within a few years.
Untill these cars arrive don't b*tch about what we don't have but instead look at what we do have. GMPD Delta cars. The Pontiac G6 with AWD, maybe even a GXP for the guys with a few more bucks, and the soon to be V8 W-bodies, though not RWD, they should be pretty cheap, like the current SC 3.8's, but with the note that says "I have a V8 back off Ricer boy!

That is a fine point, however, it does not eliminate how the GTO compares to the existing compitition.
Also, if you loaded up a Camaro SS back in 2002, you are right at the GTO's price too at $32k, and VERY VERY VERY VERY few people bought stripper Z28's, so even a "typical" Z28 would be in the $27-28k range... still a better deal, but not quite so skewed as it's made to seem.

$34,500 - $27,500 = SEVEN THOSAND DOLLARS MORE FOR A GTO THAN A WELL EQUIPPED Z/28. That's a GTO with an automatic transmission and including the gas guzzler tax.
HOW 'BOUT THEM APPLES?

The Ion Redline is one of the 2 Delta GMPD cars, it can be purchased at ANY Saturn dealer.
The Superchared ImpalaSS and MonteSS are available at ANY Chevy dealer. The V8 is coming, chevy can't just sh*t the cars out immediately they have to be engineered, tested, and be built first. Same thing with the G6 it just takes a little time. If you need a car right now I have listed 3 that fit the criteria nicely that are currently available.

Thats 7,000 worth of QUALITY I would gladly spend. The interior and ride quality of a GTO are out of the F-Bodys league. Not to mention the always nice IRS
Then there are the little things like ergonomics, trunk space (still not great, but better), rear seat space, etc...
Not to mention, GTO's are already down to UNDER $30,000 at some dealers.
HOW ABOUT THEM APPLES!

Listen to me closely:
AZTEK OUTSOLD THE FIREBIRD.
GTO is a different car for a different market. If you don't like it, fine... but don't blather on about how it should have been saved or what a terrible error it was to kill the Firebird. GM couldn't give Firebirds away.
AT LEAST GTO is worth some good press from the mags.

Re: What was Pontiac thinking?
I belive the Camaro sold some 65k units in 02, as the Firebird sold under 35k... Almost 2 to 1. Im sure Guy has some nice sales numbers. Lets not get into a big thing about who outsold who. The GTO is a great car, and for the price its a steal if you compare it to what else is out there for the price. for MY05, name another 400hp car for under 35k that has the quality that the GTO offers? Nothing, no where even comes near it. Again, the GTO isnt made to be a stripper car, it comes fully loaded with what were options on the Camaro, as standard!! Bang for the buck is back in GM's world.
Yeah, you can get a Mustang GT in the mid 20's...but you also get a 300hp Camaro or Firebird 7 years ago for less.
