Should the top of the line HSV GTS, come here as.....
Did you get the impression that I was implying it was a bad thing?
(Pontiac Tempest) - (original 326) + (Catalina/Bonneville sourced 389) = not necessary = awesome at the same time.
come on, now, give the Ion RL a little credit... but ONLY a little.
Anyways, neither of those cars' speed has a whole lot to do with their doors... so I find that association irrelevant.
Again, the doors don't get much credit for the cars' speed. I know you're referring to perceptions, but the reality remains.
I sense hostility.
I can think of hundreds of cars that have had their conventional doors modified to function as scissor doors, a large percentage of which I consider tasteless. These tend to be more common than your typical exotic, so from these I draw my "ricetastic" comparison. I wouldn't want that association for a GTO, personally.
Speaking of functionless scoops... the GTO can't be considered innocent of that crime either...
Regardless...
This is all moot because I don't see a GTO being produced as anything other than a 2 door coupe.
IMHO, for the GTO:
2 doors > 2 doors + mini doors > scissor doors > 4 doors
...and since the rear/scissor doors aren't as likely, I'd say we're mostly in agreement, wouldn't you?

As I posted above scissor doors are really no more complicated then regular doors, just a creative hinge and a counterweight. If you think a feature that functions as the only feasible way to get in and out of various $100,000+, 600+ horsepower cars is rice and comparable to functionless scoops and other nonsense of some misguided Honda owners I would say you need to reevaluate your definition.
Using them on a low volume, 400hp luxury sports coupe to make it usable makes perfect sense and is anything other than "rice".

But I think it might have backfired because the new GTO wasn't a "real GTO" (whatever that means) according to the purists. There were a lot of enthusiasts bitching and moaning back in '03.
Someone could write a study about how the GTO was mis-marketed -- that was only one problem among many.
