Shelby Mustang Super Snake.... if the GT500 & GT500KR aren't enough!

Horsepower?

In excess of 600 horsepower (about 650 sounds right).

Price?

About 10K over the KR.

When?

Within the next 10-12 months.

Excessive?

Overkill?

IMHO... yes.

Would I sell off loved ones to get one?

Probally.

Yea, it's over the top.... but;

The question is does GM have the "testicular fortitude" to actually compete?

Oh thats right, the Camaro won't be out for another two freakin years.....

I'm betting the Challenger will be strong in SRT trim, but that Snake is outrageous!

Yea, I'd sell a daughter to the gypsies for one!

BlueOvalNews.com says it will have upwards of 725hp in the unwarranted version.

Good lord!

No, the question is does Camaro even need to compete at this point.

I mean sure, bragging rights are all fun and good but I'd much much much much MUCH rather see GM put its efforts into trumping Mustang's horsepower and handling at the volume levels, not some 300 units-a-year, no warranty, factory-sponsored NHRA-for-the-street drag car.

I'd almost bet money the camaro can't compete with that HP wise. The freaking Blue Devil isn't supposed to have that much power!

PS I think the camaro is going to need a "re-freshed" front end before it comes out in order to look better than the Mustand/Challenger. That huge gold bowtie has to go!

I'd take a C6 Z06 over that. Just another Mustang with a body kit. I am aware it will have gobs of horsepower, but it'll still handle like its weight.

More:

The Super Snake post-title package will include enhancements to the Ford Shelby GT500’s handling, styling and power; tuning options will range from a warranted 600 HP V8 to over 725 HP (unwarranted). Only a limited number of Super Snakes will be built per model year at the Shelby Automobiles facility in Las Vegas beginning in late 2007.

“My team at Shelby Automobiles is always working on new ways to build better performing cars” said Carroll Shelby. “I told them that I wanted to build a vehicle that could blow the doors off of most anything on the planet. By partnering with Ford Racing, we’re giving enthusiasts a Mustang with that level of performance.”

“Mustang enthusiasts are demanding more from both Ford Racing and Shelby Autos” said Jamie Allison, Manager of Ford Racing Performance Group. “The GT500 Super Snake package, with its higher horsepower levels and balanced track-inspired tuning, satisfies those demands and then some … in a uniquely Ford – Shelby way.”

Ford Racing and Team Shelby developed the GT500 Super Snake package which will include:

• Ford Racing Supercharger upgrade kit (SuperPack 600) producing over 600 horsepower and 590 ft.-lbs. of torque
• 6-speed manual transmission with 3.73:1 rear axle ratio
• Ford Racing performance exhaust system
• Ford Racing Handling Pack offering unique performance suspension tuning including Dynamic adjustable dampers, lowering springs, tuned stabilizer bars, and front strut tower brace
• Shelby-designed Alcoa 20-inch wheels
• Ford Racing short-throw shifter
• Baer 6 piston brakes with Shelby cast calipers and larger rotors
• Front brake cooling ducts
• Unique carbon composite hood featuring classic Shelby design
• ‘Shelby’ lettering across the front edge of hood and rear decklid
• 'Super Snake' vehicle badging
• Carroll Shelby signature embroidered headrests and floor mats, and other Shelby designed components
• Official Shelby CSM dash plate

In addition, while the full Super Snake package will be available exclusively through Shelby Automobiles, many of the products comprising the Super Snake package will be available from Shelby Automobiles and Ford Racing starting in June.

What's absolutely facinating about the whole thing is that all this is done with what is essentially a STOCK GT500 engine, with mainly changes to the supercharger, exhaust, and electronics!!!

I doubt you can throw that much power through an engine with just modest changes while on weight watchers and still stay on warranty and have a relatively low price unless you start eyeing the nation's titanium supply.

From what Robert Lane told me of BON...what's better should be the pricing no these SuperSnakes.

It's strange to think that the Corvette SS will have some competition from the Shelby GT500 in terms of hp and not necessarily price.

To borrow & butcher an old Lee Iaccoca phrase:

"If you can find another car with the same horsepower at a lower price, buy it!"

I suspect short of having at least three quarters of a million burning a whole in somebody's trust fund, there probally isn't anything around that doesn't have the prefix "GE" and the suffix "Locomotive" attached to it.

As for the comment about it handling like it's weight...

...Are you even AWARE how that car handles?!
