Re: Revised Zeta returns.

Is it the coupe market that dies or the coupes within? Like the weak Monte Carlo. (FWD, no V8 as it has been for a while)

See where im going with this??

Not before the 2010 model year. You will see Zeta sedans for Chevrolet, Pontiac, and Buick before a Camaro.

wasn't that about the time GM announced the F-body would be taking a "haiatus"???

Yes - and you're reaching.

The first IROC was 1985.

In 1984 (before IROC), Mustang Camaro sales were 135,678/ 261,591.
In 1985 (IROC introduced), Mustang/Camaro sales were 156,514/ 180,018.
In 1986 (2nd IROC year), Mustang/Camaro sales were 224,410/ 192,219.
In 1987 (3rd IROC year), Mustang/Camaro sales were 159,145/ 137,760.
In 1988 (IROC only - no Z28), Mustang/Camaro sales were 211,225/ 96,275.

I don't think the IROC had a detrimental effect on Mustang sales at all - nor did it increase Camaro sales.

In 1993, Ford sold 114,228 Mustangs (up from 79,280 in 1992, and 98,737 in 1991). In 1993, Chevy sold 39,755 - though this was a short year for Camaro. A better guage would be the 119,934 Camaros sold in 1994 (123,198 Mustangs, also in a short year).

From the evidence provided in those numbers, the introduction of the 4th Gen Camaro didn't have much of an effect on Mustang sales.

There was certainly rumor around the year 2000, but I would suggest that the only people that had any real clue that the F-body would die in a few years were those that visited forums like these. I don't remember exactly when GM announced the demise of the F-body, but I have a hard time seeing that having any real bearing on Mustang sales. Also, 99+ Mustang sales peaked in 2000 with 218,525 units sold. They have not hit that since - with or without Camaro.

On the other side of the coin, Mustang sales did drop dramatically when the 67 Camaro was introduced. It is likely that Camaro played at least some part in that.

Re: Revised Zeta returns.

that wasn't it Bob. i knew the numbers before hand. i was trying to point out the fact that Camaro never took away from or added to Mustang sales. it was vaugley disguised sarcasm to prevent 20 posts saying how the Camaro impacted Mustang sales.

I was wrong. It was the 91 & 92 Mustangs that dipped.

Actually, Camaro sales started their dive with the 1998 redesign, which included the new LS1 engine.

Mustang buyers initially seemed put off with the angular look that made the Stang look more bulky. They warmed up though.

No. It was 2008 before Zeta was sidetracked. I'd say 2008 as a 2009 now.

Seems GM may be aiming a little sooner. This chassis is now the top car priority by all accounts. Expect them to cut at least a year off that estimate.

I sure hope you're right. I've heard nothing to lead me to believe that though.

So best guess right now is a total "hiatus" of 7 years? Long time to be told to "keep the faith", IMHO.

That said, I do look forward to it finally getting here.

Re: Revised Zeta returns.

So Camaro will miss its 40th? Damn that sucks. Although we all know GM's "appearance" anniversary models, it'd still would have been nice for Camaro to make its truimphant return for its 40th B-Day.

I thought Zeta had nothing to do with C****O. Last I heard, the C word car continued development through the Zeta pause. Are you changing your prognostication, Guy????

Re: Revised Zeta returns.

The one thing that really bothers about this whole 2010 thing (besides this is even later than what we were all hoping for in 2007-2008) is that by then, the Mustang will have been on the market for 5 years. The Mustang will be thinking about a reskinning by the time a Camaro comes around. I understand the whole dilemma surrounding the 5th gen situation and all. But still, talk about being late for a party!
