OnStar And StabiliTrak To Become Standard Equipment On GM Vehicles

BMW and Mercedes have offered stability control as STANDARD equipment for years, even on sub-$30K models. I'm still burning from when Cadillac made CTS buyers fork over $7K extra to get Stabilitrak.
By 2010, I wouldn't be surprised if stability control isn't offered across the board by an upstart Chinese manufacturer.
GM has taken the slow and greedy course when it comes to Stabilitrak. When it premiered in 1997, they were only behind by a year or so behind Mercedes.

I bet you they will do something interesting like integrate Onstar and StabiliTrak, ABS, Blackbox, odb all in one module... so you can't disbale one with out killing the other.. although I guess you can lways lop off the antenna for OnStar - if it can't send or recieve data, its essentially disabled....

Thumbs up to GM for a great move.
P.S. I saw a pursuit at the pontiac dealership and I am very impressed, good job on that one too.

Re: OnStar And StabiliTrak To Become Standard Equipment On GM Vehicles
I don't care if GM releases the data recorder in the event of an accident. If I was an idiot and screwed up, then I deserve to be held accountable for my actions if I was traveling at a high rate of speed and/or driving recklessly, and caused an accident.
What bothers me is if this technology is used someday to void warranty claims because it tracks the speed at which the car is driven. Or, if it is used by law enforcement to hand out speeding tickets. Most will laugh, and it seems quite Orwellian...but its a distinct, real possibility.
I want to drive my own car and do it my own way. As long as I am not hurting anyone else, who cares? I don't like the idea of an electronic nanny in my car. It isn't because of what On Star is NOW, but what it COULD BE. I am all for stability control, but On Star? I'll rip the box outta the trunk, thanks very much

I dont like On Star standard. On my future wife's car, yes, but not on my car.
How about standard XM? I hate not having XM in my Maxx. I do now, but aftermarket...but I want the clean look of it installed standard.
I really do like the idea of standard Stabilitrac...such an awesome idea.
Re: OnStar And StabiliTrak To Become Standard Equipment On GM Vehicles
Glad to see GM taking the initiative on safety by making Stabilitrack standard
However, I hope they have a button to disable it, so I can do some donuts and slide sideways in my 2008 Camaro
I have mixed feelings about OnStar being made standard. In the here and now it is a good idea, but to think the things that are possible with this technology, it becomes downright scary. I'm in Jason's camp, no Onstar for me, and if its standard, there better be a way to rip it out. Or else I'm going to keep buying old cars that don't snitch on you.

I'll NEVER own a vehicle with Onstar!!!
Re: OnStar And StabiliTrak To Become Standard Equipment On GM Vehicles
Well, you say if "I was an idiot and screwed, then I desrve to be held accountable for my actions"
then why are you against law enforcement handing out speeding tickets for it? or voiding warranty?
I'm not too hot on onstar and monitoring either.. Remember when that mag was testing the Malibu, and everytime they went thru slaloms, onstar activated? ANd they want to put these on sportscars?

Re: OnStar And StabiliTrak To Become Standard Equipment On GM Vehicles
OnStar = good.
I want something that can save my life.
I'd like to see a report on how many people have been "wronged" by OnStar "snitching" on them... I'm gonna guess it is zero.
And I'm willing to bet it stays that way too.
If you're worried about potential warranty voiding, then you shouldn't have bought a GM car, or pretty much any brand for quite sometime now, because the black box is more of a threat than OnStar is for that...

Re: OnStar And StabiliTrak To Become Standard Equipment On GM Vehicles
I also really like the idea of on-star, I am more excited about that than I am about the stabili-trak. I often do long drives on small county highways in the middle of nowhere. I like the idea that if I am ever in an accident or stuck in a ditch or whatever, that help is on its way.
Re: OnStar And StabiliTrak To Become Standard Equipment On GM Vehicles
GM:
Chevrolet
Saturn
Buick
Pontiac
Saab
Hummer
Cadillac
GMC
and Ill throw in Opel and Holden cuz im sure thees things are going to be offered global to everyone....
Honda:
Honda
Acura
and ill throw in BMW and Mercedes to even it up
GM: 10
Honda: 4 (with BMW and Mercedes in there to say equality IF they were one company)
Right there, even with the help of the other two manufacturers fictionally helping..its still only 4 brands compared to 10 GM has to do this to...
Its offered on all of GM's high end vehicles witch compete with BMW and Mercedes, Caddilac, Hummer, GMC, Corvette, SAAB and so on...and I mean in the price range and yes in some the look and stature that why I put GMC in there..

Re: OnStar And StabiliTrak To Become Standard Equipment On GM Vehicles
I am all against the black box thats in the dashboard - and eventually it could be used against you VERY dramatically. I think in such a case, GM should take on SVT's idea of having registered, approved track days. I remember hearing stories of guys blowing rears (under warranty) at the track and having a Ford Dealer there to take the cars back to the shop and repair them... under warranty... Awesome job Ford. That is something that really appeals to enthusiasts that know how bad the black box is.
By the same token I've heard many complaints from Mitsubishi owners that have had voided warranties on their cars because of the black box. No suprise knowing its mitsu...
I dont want Onstar. If it's standard, my family car and my wife's car will certainly have it. But my weekend car? Maybe I'll just buy an Ultima GTR or keep buying older models
Awesome move on GM's part. Honestly $17/mo isnt that bad, and with it across the entire line I would hope price would drop. If they got it to $10/mo I would certainly be all down with that.
Stabilitrac? I'm also all down with that. If GM does this standard and DOESNT increase the price of their cars (which would be bad) then that means they get a LOT more standard equipment. That would lower the cost of options packages and the number needed - and higher and higher safety standards are going to really have GM stand up in the next few years.
But get rid of XM radio.
