This is not a drill...or photoshop. Regal GS.
I'll go against the grain here... I'm not a fan of it.
It looks OK and seems to be a nice vehicle... but "it's neither here nor there" for me to want to own one.
What message is the car conveying? Is it a SAAB-like vehicle? Is it an M3 fighter? What audience is it pitched at - the performance fans or the people who just want something 'different'?
The engine is mild in comparison to everything else out there in its range. A meek effort by GM, I'm sorry to say.

I think that the concept indeed has the 2.8, but the press release mentions the turbo 4 specifically.....
"Power for the Regal GS comes from a high-output 2.0L Ecotec turbocharged engine with direct-injection technology. It is based on the engine that will be offered on Regal CXL models later this summer, but the engine and turbocharger are tuned to deliver greater boost pressure in the GS. The output is estimated at 255 horsepower (190 kW) and 295 lb.-ft. of torque (400 Nm)."

If it weighed less, then the LNF would be fine. Heck, it puts out as much horsepower as the old L31 Vortec 350! With a dealer-installed tune, it makes as much power and torque as a 5.3l.
I would hope that the numbers from a turbo 2.8L V6 would be considerably higher than what they are now.

Buicks that get my attention are the ones that fit with the expression "Going fast with class." AFAIK Buick never used that one officially, but it's a favorite saying on forums like turbobuicks.net and v8buick.com.
A Subaru Legacy GT2.5 would be a nice seemingly natural comparison . Subies awd , 6-speed manual trans and 2.5 ( 265hp/258 lb/ft ) to buicks awd , 6-speed manual and 2.0 ( 255hp/295 lb/ft ) . Audi TSI2.0 is not a powerhouse either . I dont see why it would be considered underpowered unless people are trying to make it into a car its not gonna be ( Audi S4 type car )
I'll be irritated if they release a GS with average performance. IMO, the 3.6DI with 300-315hp is the minimum level of acceptable performance, assuming 3700-3900 pounds.
I'm just saying that GM isn't making an impact with what is a stunning vehicle.
This car should have had a 3.6L TT in it from the outset or at least a serious 2.8L TT.
To come out (initially) with a turbo 4 is putting the car into the "me too" basket. You give shoppers a chance to review other cars instead of making them want something far more desirable.

Both of those cars werent exactly fast or great handling stock either , yet the GS tag was fine then . I liked the GTPs and owned a 98 coupe , but my gf's v6 , manual trans Maxima was both qwiker and handled better and just was a nicer car all around . So the GS wasnt above average then either .
GM Made the declaration that the Regal would be a 4 cylinder only lineup. I am not entirely sure why - but they did. The Regal GS will be getting the LNF (mentioned in the press release). The Concept is showing a turbo V6 and I have no clue why they wont stick the LNF in there right off the bat.
I still own (and love) my 98 GTP sedan. I will not part with it lightly. I suspect this GS will keep right in line with the old GTP & GS.
Handle I shall give you - but compared to other FWD platforms of their size, the GTP could handle pretty well. In 98' a GTP could keep up with a BMW 528 in a dead acceleration, and blew many other FWD competitors away because of the brutal torque- but- let's get some facts and figures straight...
1998 GTP (or Regal GS)
0-60 6.7sec (6.9 sec)
3414lb (3595lb)
240hp (240hp)
280tq (280tq)
1998 Maxima
0-60 7.6 sec
3012lb
190hp
205tq
1998 Audi A6
0-60 8.6 sec
3560lb
200hp
207tq
1998 TL (3.2L)
0-60 7.3 sec
3513lb
200hp
210tq
1999 ES300 Sport
0-60 7.8 sec
3351lb
210hp
220tq
So the GTP/Regal appears to keep up on its own with the best front drivers out there in 1998. Fast foreward to 2010, and lets put in the new regal GS against the same competition:
2010 Opel Insignia OPC (Regal GS)
0-60 5.8 sec (6.6 sec est)
4000lb (3900lb)
325hp (255hp)
295tq (295tq)
2010 Maxima (FWD)
0-60 6.5 sec
3565lb
290hp
261tq
2010 Audi A6 AWD
0-60 7.6 sec
4123lb
300hp
310tq
2010 Acura TL AWD
0-60 5.5 sec
3962lb
305hp
273tq
2010 Lexus ES350 (FWD)
0-60 7.8 sec
3605lb
272hp
254tq
Going against other FWD/AWD cars of its size - it seems to do just fine. Price wise, this Regal will likely be in the mid 30s - putting it right against the Lexus and Audi - which will be tricky. Time will tell, but this is a VERY good step in the right direction for Buick, love it or hate it.
