Now, for those of you who are holding out, Ford steps up it's campaign to rob more disgruntled F-body owners. The Mustang will have a T-top option in the near future. It will most likely be an outside builder doing the job (just like in the old days), but is likely to eventially move in-house.

I asked about this some time ago, and got a pretty shallow, non-comittal answer. Now it seems like it's a certainty.

Ford Mustangs had T-top options from the T-top heydays in the mid 1970s all the way up till the facelifted Fox Mustang of 1987 (though it was a very rare option in later years)

My guess, expect it as an option this fall.
1. I hope Ford has better luck in making its T-tops "waterproof" than GM.

2. I can personally state that I would now prefer a Mercedes-style all-glass "Panorama sunroof" to any inconvienent T-top or targa option.

3. The crude sunroof on the Pontiac G6 looks terrible when it's open. Does anyone enjoy the "pile-of-glass" look of all the small stacked glass panels. GM has gone down the wrong road with this overpriced eyesore of a sunroof. They should have just copied Mercedes - just like Toyota did with the Scion tC.

4. GuionM, you were wrong about the Mustang losing the T-top option with the 1987 facelift. It turns out that T-tops were offered until 1988.

5. I wonder how the T-tops will be stored in the Mustang's trunk. It's too shallow to store them upright like the F4 ,and nobody would put up with the envelope solution used by the F2, F3 and G-bodies. Is there any possibility the tops will stack under the floor of the truck?

That's what Rolls-Royce did in the Bentley Continental SC. (The SC stands for Sedanca Coupe. A "Sedanca" is a semi-open body style that died out in the 1930's, so don't feel stupid for not knowing what it was.) In the Continental SC, the most expensive car ever to offer "T-tops," there was a power release for the roof panels. The most interesting feature was that while there were two roof panels - like all T-tops - there was no fixed center divider bar - like a targa.

well, the 2nd and 3rd gens were leaky, but the 4th gens did a pretty good job imo
most of the people seem to say theirs don't leak (which mine and 4 other peoples i know don't)
but yea, there's always room for improvement and i'm sure they'll be fine for the next gen

i think the panoramic roof option is decent
it's something different and in this age of being "different" with respect to cars, i think it was a smart move (jmho)

If your F4 never leaves a garage, I can't guarantee your T-tops won't leak, EVER. There's also a desert in South America where it's never rains, another good place to keep your F4 if you don't want the T-tops to leak.

As standard equipment on the Scion tC, I'd say it's brilliant. On Mercedes, the Panorama Sunroof is an incredible value (relatively speaking) and no Mercedes should be ordered without it. The roof on the Pontiac G6 looks like crap when it's open and it's pretty darned pricey. Its another example of GM going in the wrong direction and charging too much for the mistake.

It really was nice having the T-Tops unique to the F-body, but since they aren't being made... more power to the Mustang having them. Lots of people love them, myself included, and if I was looking to buy a Mustang, I would be thrilled to see T-tops as an option.

Mine have never leaked.

Oh... one thing to remember...

T-top and "targa" are interchangeable terms in many cases, even though one has the bar and the other doesn't. I would be interested to see which one Ford picks.

I'd take either in a Vette.

In Europe, I saw Cougars with the Ford oval/emblem in the front.

When you love domestics and you go to Europe, you notice things like that like a hammer on your hand

I always gave the reason to people as to why I bought my T/A over a Mustang, considering I'm a Huge Ford guy.

1. T-tops, 2 looks, 3 Six Speed.

Looks like I'll be Drving a Cobra in the near Future, I *Heart* Ford..

Here's another vote for "mine have never leaked", of course I don't run my car through automatic car washes either (just uptight about that sort of thing I guess )

Ya, my 99 Z28's never leaked once.

My 89 would leak from time to time, but the 4th Gen tops were about as good as you can get.

Just becuase they may rattle or the sun comes in does not make them trashy. The first thing I did to my z28 was buy the shades and cover them in black vinyl. Not only does it look great, it lifts the ttop up enough to prevent the rattles and cushions them over bumps. There was a big jump in ttop quality between my 87 firebird and my 01 z28 that you might not be aware of since you are comparing what you had on your GTA. As far as looks go feel what you want but you are wrong.

The T-tops in our old 85 Z28 leaked pretty bad.

The T-tops in my old 99 T/A never leaked a drop.

I read somewhere on this board that t-tops were a no-go for the next RWD Chevy coupe. I hope they found a way to get it done, because I regret not getting them on my 97 BIG time. T-tops are the main reason why I want a 5th gen.

Re: Mustang gets T-tops & a few other tidbits

My Third Gens don't leak and I know some others that don't also. Obviously though, there will always be some of any Gen that do because people neglect taking care of the seals or don't put SFC's to stop the flexing which makes irregular fit.

I have to say that them now getting T-Tops is irritating, especially to a Camaro guy. They did a lousy job last time around, lets see if it happens again.
