I'm not surprised.

I love my 2002 Tahoe LS.

It is simply the best all-around vehicle I have ever owned.

WOW... I though that roof line was terrible....but at least original. I can't beleive they ripped that off.

DId you guys know the 4.8L V8 Tahoe has the best gas milage out of any V8 SUV. I was just doing some research and it even beats out smaller SUVs. Just wait until this thing gets DoD and a 6 speed automatic.

Why would a top-heavy full size SUV need IRS?? Would it really matter that much, when the solid axle works so good and is capable of supporting the 5000 pount truck without needing axle boots every 50K miles.

IRS is a DISADVANTAGE in a truck designed for towing or carrying heavy loads.

18 wheel trucks DO NOT have IRS... ask yourself "why?"

Nissan Armada = IRS
Nissan Pathfinder = IRS (I think)
Toyota 4Runner = Live
Toyota Land Cruiser = Live
Toyota Sequoia = Live (I think)
Dodge Durango = Live
Jeep GC = Live
Jeep Commander(?) = Live
GMT800s = Live
GMT360s = Live
Ford Expedition = IRS
Ford Explorer = IRS
Ford Excursion = Live

Granted, IRS is becoming more and more popular, but the 5 link, coil sprung solid rear in the Tahoe/Suburban has been praised for its ride and handling qualities in test after test, even against competitors with IRS.
Just wanted to add a little icing to the cake you baked above...
You can put ANY of the other vehicles in the back of an Excursion, and still drive away like a mad man. Excursion is built on an F250 SD frame and chassis, making it a genuine 3/4-ton SUV at MINIMUM, and most are in fact 1-ton capable when equipped with a towing package.

As Pacer and others have said, for HEAVY towing (like a 9000-lb 35' boat on a 1800-lb triple-axle trailer), you really don't want IRS (unless you crave adventure).

My point is, including the Excursion in the list above is really going out-of-class when compared to Escape, Explorer, Tribute, Cherokee, Trailblazer, etc.

True, but that is why I didn't list the compacts (Escape/Tribute/Mariner, etc.). They aren't truck based anyway. The thread started out talking about Armadas and Tahoes, and the discussion moved to IRS vs. live axle. My point is that the GMT800s are not alone in the use of the live axle (as an earlier post seemed to imply). The Armada and Tahoe/Suburban are much closer in size to the Expedition than they are to the Escape... I know the Excursion is on a heavy duty frame, but even among vehicles that are not, live axles are still used. Heck, even do-no-wrong Toyota still uses them on their SUVs...

I know I won't be taking my SUV autocrossing, to track days or on "spirited" drives down scenic winding roads.

I'll take the bait!

Bah, all import owners know that domestic folks have very low standards... Just look at the pathetic offerings over the past twenty years. No wonder the Tahoe has such good ratings!

Import owners on the otherhand, expect everything and then some, looks like Nissan has some work to do.

Armada sales are up 36.2% year-to-date (through April) and Titan sales are up 49.1% over the same period versus last year.

However in the real world it actually only gets around 15 mpg. In fact, after three years of ownership the highway mileage has actually gotten worse. (Or maybe its just the way I drive. )

Actually the last "new" car I purchased before the Tahoe was an import. And I still say the Tahoe is the best vehicle I've ever owned.
